ECS database backup
Cloud Backup Database Backup provides automated, incremental backup and recovery for self-managed databases on Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances.
Introduction
Cloud Backup Database Backup for ECS protects the self-managed databases on your ECS instances by backing them up to a Cloud Backup vault. If a database or ECS instance fails, or if data is lost to human error or ransomware, restore the data from the Cloud Backup vault.
Cloud Backup does not support databases running in containers.
To back up multiple MySQL instances on a single machine, such as a local server or an ECS instance, create a separate backup job for each instance.
Key benefits
Low cost
Cloud Backup charges no instance or configuration fees. You pay only for the backup storage you use, after deduplication and compression.
High performance
Backup jobs consume minimal resources, typically less than 0.5 cores and 100 MB of memory. Real-time backups for MySQL and Oracle achieve a near-zero Recovery Point Objective (RPO).
Broad database support
Supports all major versions of MySQL, Oracle, and SQL Server.
Easy setup
After you grant authorization, Cloud Backup automatically detects databases on ECS instances and deploys the backup client.
Automated alerts
Configure alert settings for failed tasks in the Cloud Backup console to receive notifications by email, text message, or phone call.
Backup lock to prevent accidental deletion
Vault Lock prevents accidental deletion. Once a backup is locked, no account can delete it or shorten its retention period before the period expires.
How it works
In the Cloud Backup console, select the ECS instances to back up. Cloud Backup uses Cloud Assistant to push the backup client to each instance, then backs up the selected databases based on your backup plan.
When a backup job runs, the Cloud Backup client invokes the database’s native backup interface, then deduplicates, compresses, and uploads the data to the Cloud Backup vault.
Procedure
To back up ECS databases, complete the following steps:
-
The backup procedure is the same for MySQL, Oracle, and SQL Server on ECS. This topic uses MySQL as an example.
-
Cloud Backup uses database credentials for registration. Get the username and password from your MySQL or SQL Server administrator. Oracle databases do not require a password.
-
Activation is free. You are charged for backup vault rental and storage. Each vault includes a 30-day free trial and 100 GB of free storage per month. Beyond the free quota, tiered pricing applies. For more information, see Billing methods and billable items.
-
Register a database in the Cloud Backup console. A backup client is automatically installed on the ECS instance. No charges apply until you create a backup plan.
-
Run a precheck to identify issues that may cause backup failures.
-
Create a backup plan by specifying the vault, data source, backup cycle, retention period, and backup type (full or incremental). Cloud Backup runs the plan and continuously backs up the database.
-
Restore a database at no additional cost. You can restore data to the source database or another registered database in the same account and region based on recovery points.
Pricing
ECS database backup incurs two types of fees:
Database backup vault rental fee
Create a database backup vault before you start database backups. Multiple databases in the same region can share a backup vault. Each vault includes a specific amount of free storage. For pricing details, see Pricing.
Database backup storage fee
Storage fees apply once usage exceeds the 100 GB free quota per vault. Usage is calculated on the deduplicated and compressed data volume. For pricing details, see Pricing.
Next steps
Register your ECS databases for backup: Register a MySQL database (ECS), Register an Oracle database (ECS), and Register a SQL Server database (ECS).
