Cannot delete files using the file management feature

Updated at:

After you upload program files to a Cloud Web Hosting instance, you can manage them using the file management feature. If you cannot delete a file, the cause may be an abnormal file or a permission issue. This topic describes how to resolve this issue.

Problem description

On a Linux or Windows Cloud Web Hosting instance, an error message appears when you try to delete a program file from the site's root directory using the file management feature.

Possible causes

An abnormal file or restricted file permissions can prevent you from deleting the file.

Solutions

Important
  • Files or folders deleted using the file management feature cannot be recovered. Back up your website data before you proceed. For more information, see Back up data.

  • Forcing a file deletion restarts the site. Your website will be inaccessible during the restart. Perform this operation outside of peak business hours.

  1. Force delete the file from the host management console.

    1. Log on to the Cloud Web Hosting management page.

    2. Find the Cloud Web Hosting instance and click Manage in the Actions column.

    3. In the navigation pane on the left, choose File Management > File Manager.

    4. In the Site Root Directory, find the file that you want to delete and click Delete in the Actions column.

    5. In the Delete File dialog box, select Force Delete and click Confirm.

      • If the file is deleted, the issue is resolved.

      • If the file cannot be deleted, proceed to the next step.

  2. Stop the site.

    1. In the navigation pane on the left, click Site Information.

    2. In the Website Information section, find the Running Status field and click Stop Site.

  3. Repeat Step 1 to force delete the file again.

    • If the file is deleted, the issue is resolved.

    • If the file cannot be deleted, proceed to the next step.

  4. Delete the file using an FTP tool.

    1. Connect to the Cloud Web Hosting instance using an FTP tool.

For more information, see Manage website program files with FileZilla.

    2. Rename the file that you cannot delete.

    3. Delete the renamed file.

      • The file was deleted, which resolved the issue.

      • If the file cannot be deleted, submit a ticket.
