You can enable and disable the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) feature for your Linux-based Web Hosting instance in the management console. For enhanced security, we recommend disabling the FTP feature after you finish uploading or downloading your website files. When the feature is disabled, you cannot use an FTP client to manage your files. You can re-enable it at any time.
Prerequisites
- Install an FTP client. We recommend using FileZilla. For more information, see Manage website program files using FileZilla.
Your website files are ready on your local host.
Procedure
This topic applies only to Web Hosting instances running the Linux operating system, where the FTP feature is enabled by default. You cannot enable or disable the FTP feature for instances running the Windows operating system.
- Log on to the Cloud Web Hosting management page.
- Find the Cloud Web Hosting instance you want to manage and click Manage in the Actions column.
On the Site Information page, in the Account Information section, enable or disable the FTP feature.
Enable the FTP feature
If you need to use an FTP client to upload or download website files, enable the FTP feature.
Verify that the FTP Status is Disabled.
Click Enable FTP.
On your local host, open FileZilla and upload a website file to verify the FTP connection.
For more information about how to upload website files, see Upload website files to a Linux-based Web Hosting instance.
If the file uploads successfully, the FTP feature is enabled.
If the file fails to upload, the FTP feature is not enabled. In this case, submit a ticket for assistance.
Disable the FTP feature
Disable the FTP feature when you no longer need to use an FTP client to upload or download website files.
Verify that the FTP Status is Enabled.
Click Disable FTP.
ImportantDisabling this feature turns off only account authentication for the FTP service; the service itself remains in the Running state. You can still connect to the FTP server, but you cannot authenticate to upload, download, or manage files.
