Billing methods
DLF supports two billing methods: pay-as-you-go and subscription. The table below compares both methods to help you choose the right approach for your workload.
| Pay-as-you-go | Subscription | |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Yes — applied automatically when you create a data catalog | No — requires purchasing subscription resources |
| Minimum unit | N/A | 1 CU |
| Resource quota | 5,000 CU (adjustable) | Fixed CUs pre-purchased; dedicated to the data catalog |
| Best for | Variable or unpredictable workloads | Long-term, stable workloads |
| How to enable | Enabled by default | Click Purchase Subscription in the Actions column |
Resource quota (pay-as-you-go)
The resource quota defines the maximum CUs the data catalog can use. When usage reaches the quota, no additional resources are allocated, which may affect table management and optimization features.
To prevent cost overruns, adjust the quota before usage reaches the limit.
Hybrid billing
When you purchase a minimum of 1 CU of subscription resources, hybrid billing is activated for that data catalog. For long-term and stable computing workloads, subscription resources (fixed CUs) are more cost-effective than the pay-as-you-go option.
Subscription (fixed CU) resources are consumed first. If the actual workload exceeds the subscription quota, the system automatically provisions elastic resources billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.
