Backup storage costs

Data Disaster Recovery charges for backup storage based on the total volume of data backed up each month. Choose a backup schedule specification that matches your estimated monthly backup volume to minimize costs.Backup storage costs support two billing methods: pay-as-you-go and subscription (upfront).

Subscription (upfront) billing

Charges are calculated using this formula:

Monthly charge = Base fee + (Actual data volume - Free quota) x Overage rate

If your actual data volume stays within the free quota, you pay only the base fee with no overage charges. If your actual data volume exceeds the free quota, the excess data is charged at the corresponding overage rate.

The fees displayed on the purchase page take precedence. Higher specifications deliver better backup and restoration performance at lower overage rates. For performance benchmarks, see Performance tests on backup and restoration.

Choose the right specification

The best specification is the one whose free quota covers or just exceeds your estimated monthly backup volume.

Estimate your monthly backup volume:

Estimated monthly backup volume = Database size x Number of full backups per month

Example: A 150 GB database with 4 full backups per month produces an estimated 600 GB per month (150 GB x 4). For Chinese mainland pricing:

  • micro (Entry-level) cost = CNY 30 + (600 GB - 40 GB) × CNY 0.75/GB = CNY 450

  • small (Low-spec) cost = CNY 140 + (600 GB - 400 GB) × CNY 0.35/GB = CNY 210

  • medium (Mid-spec) cost = CNY 224 (No overage fees are charged because the actual data volume is less than the free quota.)

SpecificationCalculationMonthly cost
microUSD 5 + (600 GB - 40 GB) x USD 0.117/GBUSD 70.52
smallUSD 22 + (600 GB - 400 GB) x USD 0.055/GBUSD 33
mediumUSD 35 (no overage fees, actual volume is less than the free quota)USD 35

In this example, the small specification is the most cost-effective. The medium specification is a reasonable choice if better backup and restoration performance is a priority.

Usage notes

  • Free quota resets at the start of each calendar month. Unused quota does not roll over.

  • Backup schedules can only be upgraded, not downgraded. For upgrade steps, see Upgrade a backup schedule.

  • Databases with large tables, large fields, or complex table schemas may exceed the capacity of lower-spec backup schedules and trigger backup exceptions. If this happens, upgrade the backup schedule to a higher specification and retry. If the issue persists, join the DBS DingTalk group (ID: 35585947) for technical support.

Pay-as-you-go

When you use Data Archiving in DMS, the system creates a pay-as-you-go backup plan. You are charged based on the actual backup data size.

Reduce backup storage costs

To keep costs down, consider these approaches:

  • Match your specification to your backup volume. Overpaying for a large free quota you don't use adds unnecessary cost. Use the estimation formula above to size your specification accurately.

  • Avoid over-scheduling full backups. Each full backup counts toward your monthly data volume. Schedule full backups only as frequently as your recovery objectives require.

  • Upgrade proactively. Higher specifications have lower overage rates. If you consistently generate overage charges, upgrading your specification often reduces the total monthly cost.
