Learn what happens when a Paid Edition DNS instance expires and how to renew it.

Effects of DNS instance expiration

  1. If not renewed on the expiration date, the Paid Edition service continues and DNS resolution is unaffected.

  2. If renewed within 7 days after expiration (excluding day 7), the Paid Edition service continues and DNS resolution is unaffected.

  3. If not renewed by day 7, the instance is released and DNS data on the Paid Edition cluster becomes unavailable.

Renewal

To avoid service disruptions, renew your instance as soon as you receive an expiration notification.

Renewal time

Effect

Actions

Within 7 days after expiration (excluding day 7)

The Paid Edition service and DNS resolution are unaffected.

Manually renew the DNS instance.

7 or more days after expiration

  • The DNS instance is released. DNS data on the Paid Edition cluster becomes unavailable and cannot respond to queries.

  • If your domain is registered with Alibaba Cloud, the system attempts to downgrade to the Free Edition automatically. This may fail due to domain status (for example, an enabled domain lock) without notification. Manage your subscription before expiration to ensure uninterrupted service. Alibaba Cloud is not responsible for the outcome of this downgrade attempt.

After release on day 7, you cannot restore service by renewing. Instead, you must:

  1. Purchase and bind a domain name.

  2. Bind the domain name to the newly purchased DNS instance.

  3. If applicable, reactivate any records that were suspended when the instance was released.

Renewal procedure

Renew a DNS instance manually or through auto-renewal. We recommend auto-renewal to prevent service disruption.

Auto-renewal

  1. Go to the Alibaba Cloud DNS - Instances page.

  2. Click Public Zone > Configure Auto-renewal.

  3. On the Resource Renewal page, select the instances you want to manage, and then click Enable Auto-renewal.

Manual renewal

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud DNS - Instances page.

  2. Click the Public Zone tab, and then click Renew in the row for the target instance.

  3. On the purchase page, select a subscription duration and complete the payment.

Available durations: 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, or 3 years. We recommend selecting the Auto-renewal checkbox.

Important
  • Auto-renewal takes effect the day after configuration, not immediately. Payment is processed at 08:00 (UTC+8), nine days before the instance expires. If the first attempt fails due to insufficient balance or other issues, the system retries daily until successful or until 08:00 (UTC+8) the day before expiration. If the payment still fails, manually renew the instance.

  • If you select Auto-renewal when purchasing a Public Zone instance, the system sends a reminder and creates a renewal order before expiration. No manual renewal is needed. The auto-renewal period is one month for monthly subscriptions and one year for annual subscriptions.

Discontinue the Paid Edition

To stop using the Paid Edition, downgrade to the Free Edition. Unbind a domain name from an instance.
