This topic describes how to resolve error code 0X800C0133, which prevents Outlook Express from receiving email through Alibaba Mail. For other error codes, see List of Outlook error codes.

Problem description

When you use Alibaba Mail with Outlook Express, error code 0X800C0133 appears and you cannot receive new email. The full error message is:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'XXX', Server: 'XXXX.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure
(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C0133"

Cause

Error 0X800C0133 occurs when a folder's local data file (.dbx) reaches or approaches the 2 GB size limit. Outlook Express stores each folder's messages in a separate .dbx file. Once that file reaches 2 GB, Outlook Express can no longer write to it, blocking all incoming mail for that folder. When a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) download fails with this error, the Inbox folder is typically the one that has hit the limit.

Solutions

Choose one of the following approaches based on how much email you need to retain:

  • Clean the inbox. Delete emails you no longer need, starting with those that have large attachments. Check all folders regularly and keep each folder well under 2 GB.

  • Reorganize emails into smaller folders. Create additional folders and distribute your emails across them so no single folder exceeds 2 GB:

    1. In Outlook Express, go to File > New > Folder and create one or more new folders.

    2. Select the emails you want to move, then drag them to the new folder (or right-click and choose Move to Folder).

    3. Repeat until the Inbox is below 2 GB.

  • Upgrade to a supported email client. Microsoft no longer provides security updates for Outlook Express. Switch to a current version of Outlook or use Foxmail to keep your account and communications secure.
