Explains how to troubleshoot bounce emails that contain "the mta server of ... reply" error messages.

Problem description

When you send an email, it bounces back with an error message similar to the following example:

the mta server of example.net -- mxmail.example.net(x.x.x.x) reply:451 4.3.2 Internal server error at 2023-01-09

Cause

The recipient's mail server rejected the email.

Solution

  • "the mta server" refers to the recipient's server.

  • "example.net" is typically the domain name of the recipient's mailbox.

  • "mxmail.example.net(x.x.x.x)" is the recipient's Mail Exchange (MX) server and its IP address.

  • The text after "reply:" is the bounce message from the recipient's server. This message is usually customized by the recipient, but it often explains the reason for the bounce. If you cannot determine the reason from the message, see Solutions to common bounce email errors in Alibaba Mail for explanations of common bounce messages.

  • If the issue persists, contact the recipient's mailbox administrator or service provider to investigate the reason for the bounce.
