After a subscription instance expires, you can use the Renew with Configuration Change feature to renew it with a different instance type before it is automatically released.

Scenarios

A subscription instance has expired but has not yet been automatically released. You can use the Renew with Configuration Change feature to renew the instance with a different instance type.

Note

You can also use the Renew with Configuration Change feature if an "insufficient inventory" error occurs when renewing an instance.

If you want to change the public bandwidth during renewal or downgrade the instance type within 15 days before the instance expires, use the Renew with Downgrade feature. The following table describes the differences between the Renew with Configuration Change and Renew with Downgrade features.

Description

Renew with Configuration Change

Change the instance type during renewal. You can upgrade or downgrade the instance type.

For information about supported instance type changes, see Instance type change rules and self-check.

Renew with Downgrade

  • Downgrade instance type: Downgrade the instance type within the same instance family. (Available only within 15 days before the instance expires.)

  • Change public bandwidth:

    • Current billing method is pay-by-bandwidth: Reduce the fixed bandwidth, switch the bandwidth billing method to pay-by-traffic, and set a new bandwidth peak.

    • Current billing method is pay-by-traffic: Modify the bandwidth peak.

  • Switch data disk billing method: Switch the billing method for a data disk from subscription to pay-as-you-go.

Considerations

When you use the renewal with specification change feature, the list of available instance types for some instances may show migration types. Note:

  • If your instance is not an I/O optimized instance, selecting a migration instance type converts it to an I/O optimized instance. You must then reselect the system disk type. The system disk must support I/O optimization, such as an ultra disk, standard SSD, or enterprise SSD.

  • If your instance is in a classic network, its private IP address may change. On the renewal with specification change page, confirm that this change to the private IP address will not affect the applications and services on your instance.

Procedure

  1. Go to ECS console - Instances.

  2. In the top navigation bar, select the region and resource group of the resource that you want to manage. Region

  3. Click the ID or name of the target instance to go to its details page. In the All Operations section, select Renewal and Upgrade or Downgrade.

  4. Configure the renewal and configuration change.

    1. Select an appropriate instance type.

For information about supported instance type changes, see Instance type change rules and self-check.

    2. Select a renewal duration.

The available renewal durations are displayed on the Renewal and Upgrade or Downgrade page.

    3. Enable auto-renewal as needed.

    4. Read the configuration change notice, then select the Elastic Compute Service (ECS) Terms of Service checkbox.

  5. Click Confirm Order and complete the payment.

Result

When the renewal with configuration change is complete, the instance automatically restarts and enters a new billing cycle. The new instance type takes effect immediately.
