Renew a subscription ECS instance and downgrade its instance type, public bandwidth, or data disk billing method

If you need to renew a subscription ECS instance but your resource demands are lower for the next billing cycle, or your current instance is oversized, you can use the Renew and Downgrade feature. This lets you downgrade the instance type (vCPUs and memory) within the same instance family, change the public bandwidth, or switch the data disk billing method while renewing the instance. This helps you save on costs for the next billing cycle.

Usage notes

Before you use Renew and Downgrade, review the following information.

Item

Description

Available window

From 15 days before the instance expires until the instance is released.

Note

For information about the period from the expiration date to the release date, see Renew a subscription instance.

Supported downgrade operations

  • Downgrade instance type: You can downgrade to another instance type within the same instance family. (This feature is available only within 15 days before the instance expires.)

    Important
  • Change public bandwidth:

    • If you pay by bandwidth: Reduce the bandwidth, or switch the billing method to pay-by-traffic and set a peak bandwidth.

    • If you pay by traffic: Change the peak bandwidth.

  • Convert data disk billing method: Switch from subscription to pay-as-you-go.

    Note

To resize or change the type of a disk, see Resize a disk, Shrink a disk, and Change the category of a disk.

Instance restart required

  • Downgrade instance type: Yes

For the downgrade to take effect, you must either wait for the automatic system restart or manually restart the instance during the new billing cycle.

    Warning

The system automatically restarts the instance at the Renew and Downgrade that you set when you use the Restart Time feature. Plan the restart time carefully to avoid business disruptions.

To apply the downgrade earlier, you can manually restart the instance after the new billing cycle begins but before the scheduled Restart Time. This cancels the scheduled automatic restart task.

If you manually restart the instance before the new billing cycle begins, the downgrade does not take effect, and the scheduled automatic restart still runs as planned.

  • Change public bandwidth: No

  • Convert data disk billing method: No

Effective time of new configuration

  • Downgrade instance type: Takes effect after the instance is automatically or manually restarted in the new billing cycle. The configuration remains unchanged for the remainder of the current billing cycle.

  • Change public bandwidth or convert data disk billing method: The new configuration takes effect in the next billing cycle. The configuration remains unchanged for the remainder of the current billing cycle.

Configuration impact

After you use the Renew and Downgrade feature, you cannot perform the following operations for the rest of the current billing cycle:

  • Upgrade the instance type.

  • Temporarily upgrade public bandwidth.

  • Expand disk capacity, including extending partitions and file systems.

Procedure

  1. Go to ECS console - Instances.

  2. In the top navigation bar, select a region and resource group for your instance.

  3. Click the ID or name of the target instance to go to its details page. In the All Operations section, select Renew and Downgrade.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to change the resource configuration and renew the instance.

    Warning

If you change the instance type, you must select a Restart Time. The instance is automatically restarted at the specified time, and the downgrade takes effect. Plan the restart time carefully to avoid disrupting your business.

  5. Read and agree to the ECS Terms of Service, then click Create Order. Follow the prompts to complete the payment.

Next steps

  • If you downgrade the instance type, the instance is automatically restarted at the scheduled Restart Time for the downgrade to take effect. To apply the downgrade earlier, you can manually restart the instance after the new billing cycle begins but before the scheduled Restart Time. This cancels the scheduled automatic restart task.

    Important

If you manually restart the instance before the new billing cycle begins, the downgrade does not take effect, and the scheduled automatic restart still runs as planned.

  • If you change the public bandwidth of an ECS instance in a classic network from 0 Mbps to a non-zero value for the first time, you must manually restart the ECS instance within 7 days after the new billing cycle begins for the new configuration to take effect. You can restart the instance in the ECS console or by calling the RebootInstance API.
