This topic describes how to create, upgrade, downgrade, and manage an Edge Node Service (ENS) instance in the ENS console.
Usage instructions
-
Before you can create an instance, you must activate the ENS service. For more information, see Activate ENS.
-
ENS supports various instance types and regions. Contact your Alibaba Cloud account manager to request the instance types and regions that you need. Your account manager will configure the requested resources in the ENS console so that you can purchase them.
-
For more information about instance statuses during creation and management, see Instance statuses.
Create an instance
-
Log on to the ENS console.
-
In the navigation pane on the left, click .
-
On the Instances page, click Create Instance.
-
Select Basic Configurations.
Configuration Item
Description
Billing Method
Supports Subscription and Pay-as-you-go billing methods.
NoteSubscription is available for all instance types. Pay-as-you-go is available for x86 compute-optimized instance types. Select a billing method as needed.
Instance Type
Supports instance types such as x86 compute-optimized, x86 bare metal, and heterogeneous computing. Select an Instance Type as needed.
Instance Type
Select Instance Type based on your business needs. For more information, see Instance overview.
NoteC stands for virtual central processing unit (vCPU), and G stands for memory. For example, compute-optimized 4C8G means 4 vCPU cores and 8 GB of memory. You can submit a ticket or contact your Alibaba Cloud account manager to request the instances you need.
Image
-
Supports Custom Image and Public Image.
-
Custom Image: You can select custom images stored in different regions. You can create custom images in the console. For more information, see Create a custom image or Use a build machine to create a custom image.
-
Public Image: Provides third-party commercial images and open source public images. For more information, see Public images.

Configure Network and Storage.
Configuration Item
Description
Network
Supports Network Hosting and Self-built Network.
-
If you do not need to customize CIDR blocks, select Network Hosting. ENS allocates a default CIDR block for you.
In Network Hosting mode, you can schedule computing power by region, province, city, edge zone, or areas outside China. If you schedule by region, province, or city, you can enter a node scheduling policy to select suitable nodes. If you schedule by edge zone or areas outside China, instances are created only within the specified scope.
-
To customize CIDR blocks, select Self-built Network.
Region
-
Select a region and enter the number of instances as needed.
-
When you create a public network interface controller (NIC), you must select its billing method, IP type, ISP, and bandwidth throttling.
Note-
If an instance has multiple NICs, you must manually configure the default public NIC.
-
Only x86 compute-optimized, x86 bare machine, and ARM compute-optimized instance types support public NICs.
-
For detailed rules on public bandwidth billing, see Public bandwidth billing.
System Disk and Data Disks
Select the type and capacity for the System Disk and Data Disk as needed.
Note-
The system disk size must be a multiple of 10 and at least 20 GB. The capacity of the system disk and data disks must be greater than or equal to the default capacity of the image.
-
If the system disk capacity is larger than the default image capacity, you must scale out the partitions and file systems yourself.
-
Disks created with an instance have the same billing method as the instance.
-
x86 bare machine, x86 bare metal, and heterogeneous bare metal instance types do not support custom selection of system and data disks.
Security Group
Select a Security Group. A security group acts like a firewall to control network access.
NoteSecurity groups are supported for x86 compute-optimized and ARM compute-optimized instance types.
-
-
Configure System Settings.
Configuration Item
Description
Set Password
Supports Password and Key Pair.
NoteKey pairs are only supported for Linux systems and for x86 compute-optimized, heterogeneous virtual machine, and ARM compute-optimized instance types.
Instance Name
You can set the Instance Name and Hostname. Sequential Suffix and Custom Sequential Instance Name are also supported.
NoteUse the format
namePrefix[beginNumber, bits]nameSuffixto set different sequential instance names for each instance. The maximum value forbitsis 6.The sequential suffix starts from 001 and increments. The maximum value is 999.
Tags
Set instance Tags as needed.
Advanced Settings
Instance Custom Script can be run as a custom script when the instance starts to automate configuration. It can also be passed as regular data to the instance. To inject user data, enter it in the advanced settings.
-
-
Confirm your configuration details. Read and select the checkbox for the Edge Node Service ENS Terms of Service agreement, and then click Confirm Order. To automatically renew the instance upon expiration, select Auto Renewal.
-
You are redirected to the payment page. If you have a coupon, select Use Coupon and then click Purchase. After you complete the payment, a success page is displayed.
-
If you purchase a subscription instance, you are redirected to the payment page. After you complete the payment, the instance creation begins.
-
If you purchase a pay-as-you-go instance, the system begins to create the instance immediately.
-
-
After the instance is created, log on to the instance to verify that the data migration was successful.
