Hybrid Disaster Recovery uses public cloud resources to simplify the hardware, software, and operations and maintenance (O&M) required for a disaster recovery center. This lets you focus on building your disaster recovery system.

Procedure

Follow these six steps to set up disaster recovery for your critical applications. The following diagram shows the process:

  1. Step 1: Set up a cloud VPC

    Set up a virtual private cloud (VPC) and a vSwitch for disaster recovery, and configure their CIDR blocks. For testing, you can use the default configurations to create the VPC and vSwitch, or configure their CIDR blocks to match your on-premises network. For production, configure the CIDR blocks based on your requirements.

  2. Step 2: Create a disaster recovery site pair

    After the cloud network is ready, associate your on-premises data center with the Alibaba Cloud network. To do this, create a continuous replication site pair in the Hybrid Disaster Recovery console.

  3. Step 3: Deploy the CDR gateway

    After you create the site pair, download and deploy the CDR gateway in your data center. The CDR gateway aggregates real-time data streams from all protected servers and sends them to the disaster recovery network in the cloud. A virtual machine (VM) template for VMware environments is available. You can deploy the template to install the gateway.

  4. Step 4: Install Alibaba Cloud Replication Service

    After you deploy the CDR gateway, download the Alibaba Cloud Replication Service (AReS) installation package from the link on the gateway. Then, install the package on your application servers. AReS uses the CDR gateway to replicate your servers to Alibaba Cloud in real time.

  5. Step 5: Application disaster recovery

    After you install AReS on the application servers, you can manage all disaster recovery jobs from the Hybrid Disaster Recovery console. From the console, you can start data replication, run disaster recovery drills, and perform failovers. You can also monitor all disaster recovery jobs.

  6. Failback to on-premises VMware

    You can use Continuous Data Replication (CDR) to fail back. If an on-premises VM fails, you can fail back the recovered ECS instance from the cloud to your on-premises VMware environment or a physical machine.

Hybrid Disaster Recovery uses this technology to provide cross-region or cross-zone disaster recovery for various business requirements. This technology uses asynchronous replication at the disk layer and does not require an agent to be installed on the protected instance.
