Format Painter

Function overview

The Format Painter in Quick BI is a convenient dashboard tool that lets you use a styled chart as a template and apply its appearance—such as colors, fonts, and borders—to other charts with a single click. This greatly improves editing efficiency and eliminates the need for repetitive style configuration.

Benefits

• Improve efficiency: Sync styles with one click instead of adjusting each chart individually. This saves significant configuration time.

• Consistent style: Ensure all charts on a dashboard follow the same visual standard. This enhances the overall appearance, professionalism, and consistency of the information presented.

Scenarios

A dashboard contains multiple Key Performance Indicator (KPI) charts styled with your company's standard brand colors and fonts. You can apply this style to all charts to ensure visual consistency.

Limits

Note the following limits when using the Format Painter:

1. Copied content: The Format Painter copies only the visual style settings of a chart. It does not copy the data source, selected dimension or measure fields, chart type, or any data-related configurations. Examples of data-related configurations include conditional formatting, measure prefixes and suffixes, and gauge start and end values. Its core function is to copy style, not content or structure.

2. Cross-chart-type application:

   • Same chart type: Using the Format Painter between charts of the same type, such as from one ticker board to another, provides the best results. Most styles are copied accurately.

   • Different chart types: The Format Painter can apply styles between different chart types. However, it applies a style only if the destination chart supports the corresponding style configuration items from the source chart. If the destination chart does not support a style item from the source chart—such as an endnote—that style item is not applied. For more information, see the following table:

Procedure

On the dashboard editing page in Quick BI, follow these steps to sync styles using the Format Painter:

1. Select the source chart

   On the dashboard editing page, select the chart whose style you want to copy (the source chart).

2. Use the Format Painter

   In the toolbar at the top of the dashboard editing page, find and click the Format Painter icon.

   

3. Select the destination chart(s)

   Click one or more charts to which you want to apply the style (the destination charts).

   

FAQ

1. Q: What does the Format Painter copy? Does it change my data binding?

   A: The Format Painter copies only the visual style properties of a chart, such as colors, fonts, labels, axes, backgrounds, and borders. It does not change the dataset, dimension or measure fields, or the chart type that the chart is bound to.

2. Q: Can I apply the style of a column chart to a pie chart? What will the result be?

   A: Yes. The Format Painter supports applying styles across different chart types, but it syncs only the style items that both charts support. For the best results, use the Format Painter between similar chart types.

3. Q: Why does the destination chart's style not look exactly the same as the source chart's style after I use the Format Painter?

   A: The most common reason is that the source and destination charts are of different types. This means many style configuration items are not compatible, and only the items that both charts share are synced.
