Migration templates pre-configure migration parameters that are automatically applied during server migration.
Limitations
Only server migration templates are currently supported.
Procedure
-
Go to the Migration Template page in the SMC console.
On the Migration template page, click Modify a template.
If you are configuring a migration template for the first time, skip this step.
Modify the migration template parameters as needed.
The template covers basic parameters, network configuration, incremental data settings, and advanced settings.
Parameter category
Parameter
Description
Basic Parameters
Destination Region
The Alibaba Cloud region to migrate the source server to. Regions and zones.
Migration Test
Enable or disable migration tests.
Execution Method
Based on whether Migration Test is enabled, select the execution mode:
If migration drill is enabled
Test Only: Creates a migration drill task only. After the drill completes, you must manually start the server migration task.
Test and Migrate: After the drill completes, the system automatically starts the migration task if no Critical items are found. Test and Migrate is selected by default.
If migration drill is not enabled
Execute Immediately: Starts migration immediately after creating the task. Execute Immediately is selected by default.
Create Only: Creates a migration task only. Go to the Actions column and click Start Migration Job to start the migration task manually.
Network Configuration
Network Type (Required)
Select the network for transferring migration data to the intermediate instance. The public network is used by default. The intermediate instance is created in the selected VPC and vSwitch.
Internet(Default)
Migration data is transmitted through the public network. The source server must have public network access, and you must specify a VPC and vSwitch. If none exist, click Create to create one, then refresh and select it. Create VPC and vSwitch.
VPC
Migration data is transmitted through the VPC internal network. Connect the source server to an Alibaba Cloud VPC, and specify a VPC and vSwitch. If none exist, click Create to create one, then refresh and select it. Create a VPC and vSwitch.
NoteIf your on-premises data center (IDC), VM environment, or cloud host can directly access an Alibaba Cloud VPC, use this method. Private network transmission is faster and more stable than the public network. You can use VPN Gateway, Express Connect physical connection, or Smart Access Gateway to connect source servers to a VPC. Connect on-premises data centers to a VPC.
Transmission Speed Limit
Limits the data transfer speed, in Mbit/s. If Compression Ratio is set to a value greater than 0, the actual network transfer speed for the compressed data is lower than the speed displayed in Real-time Migration Status.
Transmission Compression Ratio
Sets the data compression level for migration.
In environments with limited bandwidth, a higher compression ratio can increase data transfer speed.
In environments with high bandwidth, we recommend that you do not compress data to reduce CPU usage on the source server.
Valid values: 0 to 10. The default value is 7. A value of 0 indicates that data is not compressed.
Incremental Data Configuration
Automatic Incremental Synchronization
Whether to automatically synchronize incremental data from the source server to Alibaba Cloud.
ImportantIf this is a workgroup migration, you must enable this switch.
Sync Frequency
The interval for automatic incremental migration. Valid values: 1 hour to 7 days.
Maximum number of retained images
Maximum number of images to retain. Valid values: 1 to 10.
Advanced Settings
Checksum Verification
Enhances data consistency verification but may reduce transmission speed.
SSL Encrypted Transmission
The default value is Auto-Select. SSL encryption for data transfer improves security and data integrity.
License Type
Select the license type.
Alibaba Cloud License (default): Currently only provides Microsoft Windows Server licenses. When you use the migrated image to create ECS instances in China (Hong Kong) and overseas regions, image license fees apply and the license is automatically activated. Actual fees are shown on the instance creation page.
BYOL: Bring Your Own License (BYOL). Currently supported licenses mainly include Microsoft, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. When you use the migrated image to create ECS instances, no image license fees apply. Activate the license yourself.
NoteIf you already have ECS instances, you can purchase Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and other software licenses for them. Purchase software licenses for ECS instances.
Image Check
The image check feature verifies whether an image is valid and can be used to create a fully functional ECS instance. You can use this feature when you create server migration and agentless VMware migration jobs.
The image check feature helps you quickly identify potential issues with the image or instance after migration and provides solutions to ensure compliance with Alibaba Cloud standards, which increases the instance startup success rate.
Migration Job Tag
Bind tag key-value pairs to the migration task for easier filtering and management.
Click Save Template.
What to do next
After you configure a migration template, its parameters are automatically applied during server migration without requiring template selection:
Migrate a single server: Server migration.
Batch migrate servers: Batch server migration.
