The ApsaraVideo VOD acceleration service supports both pay-by-data-transfer and pay-by-bandwidth metering methods. You can change to the method that best suits your business needs. This topic describes how to change the metering method and when the change takes effect.

Metering methods

For ApsaraVideo VOD, you can change the metering method only for the acceleration service. The acceleration service supports three metering methods that you can switch between.

Note

To use the monthly 95th percentile billing method, you must submit a ticket or contact your Alibaba Cloud business representative to activate it.

  • Pay-by-data-transfer: You are charged based on the total monthly outbound traffic according to a tiered pricing model for each region. This method is ideal for services with fluctuating traffic, occasional bandwidth peaks, and a daily bandwidth utilization of less than 30%.

  • Pay-by-daily-peak-bandwidth: You are charged based on the daily peak bandwidth in each region. The system collects a bandwidth data point every 5 minutes, resulting in 288 data points per day. The highest value (in Mbps) is your billable daily peak bandwidth. This method is suitable for services with stable traffic and a daily bandwidth utilization of more than 30%.

  • Monthly 95th percentile billing: Within a calendar month, all 5-minute bandwidth data points for your account are sorted in descending order. The top 5% of these data points are discarded. The highest remaining value (in Mbps) is your billable monthly 95th percentile peak bandwidth. This method is suitable for services with high traffic volumes, unpredictable traffic peaks, or monthly consumption exceeding CNY 100,000.

Prerequisites

To use the acceleration service, you must configure an accelerated domain name. For more information, see Add an accelerated domain name.

Limitations

You can change the metering method again only after the current change takes effect.

Warning

If you change your metering method to monthly 95th percentile billing or pay-by-daily-peak-bandwidth, you can no longer use ApsaraVideo VOD data transfer packages to offset charges for the acceleration service. You will receive pay-as-you-go bills based on the new billing rules. Proceed with caution.
