Change disk performance level

When you create a cloud computer, you can select its specifications by using a custom template. Enterprise Graphics or High Frequency cloud computers use ESSDs by default, and you can specify their disk capacity and performance level (PL). You can also change the PL of a system or data disk. This topic describes how to change the performance level of a disk.

Background information

Disk performance levels

Disks are block storage products from Alibaba Cloud that offer low latency, high performance, data persistence, and high reliability. For more information, see Overview of Block Storage.

Elastic Desktop Service (EDS)'s Enterprise Graphics or High Frequency types use ESSDs by default. ESSDs are ultra-high performance cloud disks based on a new-generation distributed block storage architecture. They combine 25GE networking and RDMA technology to provide up to 1,000,000 random read/write IOPS and lower single-path latency per disk. For more information, see ESSD.

Performance level

Maximum IOPS per disk

Capacity range

PL0

10,000

20 GiB to 32 TiB

PL1

50,000

20 GiB to 32 TiB

PL2

100,000

461 GiB to 32 TiB

PL3

1,000,000

1261 GiB to 32 TiB

Limitations

  • The following limitations apply when changing performance levels:

    Source performance level

    Actions

    PL0

You can upgrade the performance level to PL1, PL2, or PL3.

    PL1, PL2, and PL3

    • If the source disk uses the pay-as-you-go billing method, you can change its performance level between PL1, PL2, and PL3.

    • If the source disk uses the subscription billing method, you can only upgrade to a higher performance level.

  • An Alibaba Cloud account can run a maximum of five concurrent disk configuration change tasks in the same region. Additional tasks are queued and processed in order.

  • Because the selectable performance level for an ESSD depends on its capacity (for example, the minimum capacity for PL0 is 20 GiB and for PL3 is 1261 GiB), you cannot upgrade to a higher performance level if the disk's current capacity is below the minimum requirement for the target performance level. You can first resize the disk and then change its performance level. For more information, see Resize a data disk partition.

Impacts

  • During the configuration change, disk performance may fluctuate. We recommend that you perform this operation during off-peak hours.

  • End users can continue to use their cloud computers during the configuration change.

  • The change can take several hours or longer, depending on the disk throughput, storage size, and original disk type. Monitor the progress in the EDS console after starting the operation.

  • You cannot perform the following operations on a disk that is in the Changing Specifications state:

    • Cancel the disk configuration change task.

    • Change the disk performance level.

    • Create snapshots.

    • Resize the disk.

    • Partition and format the disk.

    • Re-initialize the disk.

    • Attach or detach the disk.

    • Roll back the disk by using a snapshot.

    • If the system disk is being modified, you cannot change the image (that is, you cannot replace the operating system).

  • In rare cases, the disk configuration change may fail due to resource issues. If this occurs, retry the operation.

Billing

Changing the performance level of a disk does not change its billing method. The following rules apply:

  • For a subscription cloud computer, the disk is also subscription-based. When you change its performance level, you are charged the price difference for the remainder of the billing cycle.

  • For a pay-as-you-go cloud computer, the disk is also pay-as-you-go. After you change its performance level, you are charged at the new rate.

For more information about disk billing, see Block Storage Billing.

Prerequisites

  • You have created an Enterprise Graphics or High Frequency cloud computer. For more information, see Create a cloud computer.

  • The cloud computer is in the Running or Stopped state.

  • (Recommended) Create a snapshot for the disk to back up data. For more information, see Using Snapshots (Public Preview).

Procedure

  1. Log on to the Elastic Desktop Service Enterprise console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Resources > Cloud Computers.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  4. On the Cloud Computers page, find the target cloud computer, click More in the Actions column, and then select Modify Disk.

  5. In the Change Disk Configuration dialog box, click Upgrade/Downgrade in the Actions column and select a Destination PL for the system disk or data disk.

  6. Confirm the cost information and click OK.
