You can create a backup plan to periodically back up your CPFS file system. This topic describes how to create a backup plan, view backup jobs, and verify that backups are successful.

Note

The new console provides a CPFS backup wizard that helps you quickly add a data source and create a backup plan. If this is your first time backing up a CPFS file system, we recommend using the backup wizard.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure the following requirements are met:

Required

Optional (based on your network environment)

  • You have activated the Alibaba Cloud Cloud Backup service. No fees are charged for activating Cloud Backup, but using the backup feature of Cloud Backup incurs Cloud Backup storage capacity fees. For more information, see Pricing.

  • Your CPFS file system can access Alibaba Cloud over the internet. If internet access is unavailable, you must connect the CPFS file system to an Alibaba Cloud VPC by using an Express Connect circuit or a VPN gateway. The routes from your on-premises network to the cloud must be 100.64.0.0/10 or a combination of 100.64.0.0/11 and 100.96.0.0/11. For more information, see Connect a VPC to an on-premises data center (single-tunnel mode).

Back up CPFS files

Create a backup plan

Note

After you create a backup plan, the first backup job is a full backup. Subsequent jobs are incremental backups by default.

  1. On the CPFS Backup page, click the Protected CPFS data sources tab, and then click Add CPFS backup.

    Note

If you are using the classic console (the Try New Version button is displayed in the upper-right corner), on the Data Source List tab, find the target CPFS data source and click Create Backup Plan in the Actions column.

  2. In the Create Backup Plan panel, configure the following parameters:

    Parameter

    Description

    Select Data Source

Select the CPFS data source that you want to back up.

    Note

This parameter is available only in the new console.

    Source Paths

Enter the directory to back up. You can specify only one directory. Wildcard characters are not supported. The path must be relative to the Data Source Path. Use / to back up the entire directory.

    Backup Rule

    Select a backup rule:

    • Include All Files: Backs up all files in the selected path. This rule is suitable for backing up an entire directory.

    • Include Files: Backs up only the specified files. This rule is suitable for scenarios where you need to back up only a few important files.

    • Exclude Files: Excludes the specified files from the backup. This rule is suitable for scenarios where you need to exclude temporary files such as logs and caches.

    Note

    These rules are mutually exclusive.

If you select Include Files or Exclude Files, enter one file path per line in the Enter Paths field. The path matching rules are as follows:

    • If a path starts with a forward slash (/), the system filters files based on the full path within the source path.

    • If a path does not start with a forward slash (/), the system filters files based on the relative path within the source path. Any subdirectory that matches the rule is affected.

    Warning

If a file matches both an inclusion rule and an exclusion rule, the file is not backed up.

    Backup Policy

Select a backup policy from the drop-down list.

Cloud Backup automatically backs up your data source based on the specified backup policy. A backup policy defines key settings such as backup vault encryption, backup interval, retention period, cross-region backup, and automatic archiving.

If the default backup policies do not meet your requirements, click Create Backup Policy or Edit Policy to manage backup policies. For more information about the parameters in a backup policy, see Policy center.

After the plan is created, its Plan Status is enabled. Cloud Backup then runs backup jobs at the specified start time and interval.

Backup status

Status

Description

Ready

The resource has just been added to the list of protected resources and is awaiting its first backup.

Protected

The resource is backed up, and the system is waiting for the next backup job to run.

Backing up

A backup job is in progress.

Paused

All backup plans for this resource are paused. To resume backups, enable a backup plan on the backup details page.

Stopped

The source resource cannot be found, possibly because the source resource was released. The backup data is automatically deleted after it expires. On the backup details page, you can view the backup expiration time or restore data from the backup history.

Verify backup success

After a backup job is complete, you can verify that it was successful in the following ways:

  1. In the backup task list, check whether the task status is "Completed".

  2. In the Backup History, verify that a new backup point exists and its size is as expected.

  3. (Optional) Use the Browse feature to view the files in the backup point and confirm that your critical files were successfully backed up.

View backup jobs

When the scheduled time arrives, Cloud Backup runs the backup job.

Note

The progress percentage is dynamically estimated by the system based on the current data volume and is for reference only. During the backup process, the data scan may not be complete, and the displayed total scanned size may be smaller than the actual total data volume. The final job status is the definitive indicator of completion.

On the Backup jobs tab, a backup is successful if its Status is Completed. You can view detailed information about the job, such as Total scanned at source, Total data backed up, Data written to vault, and Backup speed. For descriptions of these metrics, refer to the tooltips in the Cloud Backup console.

Note
  • For backup jobs completed on or after June 1, 2025, statistics for data volume and file count are displayed for Total scanned at source, Total data backed up, and Data written to vault. For jobs completed before this date, only data volume statistics are displayed for these metrics.

  • The job list displays records from the last six months only. To access older data, export it from Reports and audits.

To cancel an in-progress backup job, click Cancel in the Actions column for the job and confirm the cancellation.

Manage backup content

On the CPFS Backup > Protected CPFS data sources page, select the region of the target data source. Click View Details to the right of the target data source, and then go to the Backup History tab to manage your backup content.

Note

If you are using the classic console (the Try New Version button is displayed in the upper-right corner), on the Data Source List tab, click the image icon next to the target CPFS data source, and then click the image icon next to the backup plan. The available operations are the same as those shown after you click the image icon to switch the display mode.

Browse backup files

You can use the Browse feature to view backed-up files.

  1. In the Backup History, find the target backup point and click Browse in the Actions column.

Alternatively, you can click the image icon on the right side of the backup history to switch the display mode, click the target backup point, and then select Browse.

  2. In the Browse panel, view the backed-up CPFS files.

Note

You cannot directly download backed-up files. However, you can indirectly download them by restoring them to a specified path. For example, during restoration, set Restore Path Type to Specify Path and set Destination Path to /temp/path. Ensure the path exists before starting the restore job; otherwise, the job will fail. After the job completes, the restored files are available in the specified path.

Extend backup point retention

You can extend the retention period of a backup point to keep the backup data longer.

Important
  • The retention period of a backup point can only be extended, not shortened.

  • The retention period cannot be extended for backup points with a permanent retention period.

  1. In the Backup History, click the image icon in the Expires At column for the target backup point.

Alternatively, you can click the image icon on the right side of the backup history to switch the display mode, click the target backup point, and then click the image icon next to Expires At.

  2. Set a Schedule Time or select Never Expire, and then click Save.

The new expiration time appears in the Expires At column.

Delete backup data

Delete the backup point data generated by the backup client.

Important
  • Deleted backup points cannot be restored. Proceed with caution.

  • If the "Retain at least one backup version" setting is enabled in the backup plan, you cannot delete the latest backup. To delete it, you must first disable this option in the backup plan.

  • After a backup plan is deleted, Cloud Backup removes the CPFS data source from the list of protected data sources when the latest backup point expires or is deleted.

In the list mode of the Backup History, use one of the following methods to delete a backup point:

  • Delete a single backup point: Click Delete in the Actions column for the target backup point and confirm the deletion.

  • Delete backup points in bulk: Select the target backup points, click Delete Backup Point below the list, and confirm the deletion.

Alternatively, you can click the image icon on the right side of the backup history to switch the display mode, click the target backup point, and then select Delete.

Manage backup plans

On the CPFS Backup page, select the region where the target CPFS data source resides. Then, click the Protected CPFS data sources tab, click View Details to the right of the target CPFS data source, and navigate to the backup plan tab to manage the backup plan.

Note

If you are using the classic console (the Try New Version button is displayed in the upper-right corner), on the Data Source List tab, click the image icon in front of the target CPFS data source to perform the corresponding operations.

Run an immediate backup

In the Actions column of the backup plan, select > Run Now to start a backup immediately.

Modify a backup plan

  1. Click Modify in the Actions column of the backup plan.

  2. In the Configure Plan panel, modify the basic settings and backup policy as needed.

  3. Click OK.

Pause or resume backup plan

Backup plans are enabled by default. If you need to stop data backups for a specific period, you can pause the backup plan and then resume it later.

  • Pause a backup plan: Turn off the switch in the Plan Status column or select > Suspend Plan in the Actions column, and then confirm the pause.

When a backup plan is paused, subsequent backup jobs will not run. Existing backup points remain and expire based on their configured retention period. However, if the "Retain at least one backup version" setting is enabled, the last backup version is not affected by the retention period. Billing for the CPFS data source continues as long as it has backup points.

  • Resume a backup plan: After a backup plan is paused, turn on the switch in the Plan Status column or select > Resume Plan in the Actions column.

Delete backup plan

If a resource no longer requires periodic backups, you can delete its backup plan.

Important

Deleted backup plans cannot be restored. Proceed with caution.

In the Actions column of the backup plan, select > Delete Plan, and then confirm the deletion.

Manage backup clients

On the CPFS Backup > Protected CPFS data sources page, select the region of the target data source. Click View Details to the right of the target data source. In the Client information section, you can manage the backup client and manage the client group.

Note
  • If you are using the classic console (the Try New Version button is displayed in the upper-right corner), select the corresponding feature on the Data Source List tab to perform operations.

  • You cannot uninstall an on-premises client directly from the console. To uninstall an on-premises client, see How do I uninstall a Cloud Backup client? After uninstallation, the client status is updated to Stopped.

Reinstall backup client

To the right of Client Operation, select > Reinstall. After installation, the client status changes to Activated.

Configure client parameters

To the right of Client Operation, click Client Settings, configure the client parameters, and save the settings. We recommend that you use the default configuration.

Client setting

Description

Use HTTPS

Specifies whether to use the HTTPS protocol for data transfer. Because HTTPS transfer involves encryption and decryption, it may affect transfer performance. If you modify this configuration, the change takes effect when the next backup or restore job starts.

Note

This setting affects only data security during network transmission. Regardless of whether HTTPS is enabled, backup data is encrypted when stored in the backup vault.

Data Network

Select whether to transfer data over a VPC or the internet. If the client is in an Alibaba Cloud VPC or is connected to one through an Express Connect circuit, select VPC as the transfer network.

Adjust client group

Note

Client groups are supported only for CPFS and on-premises NAS. Local file backup supports only a single client.

Adjust a client group to add or remove clients.

  1. On the backup details page, find and click the Adjust client group button next to Number of clients.

  2. In the dialog box that appears, select the clients to add to the client group, or deselect clients to remove.

  3. Click OK to save the settings.

Enterprise-grade features

Backup vault replication

To prevent regional disasters or account management risks from affecting business continuity, Cloud Backup supports configuring cross-region backup or cross-account backup vault replication for backup vaults whose Storage Vault Type is General-purpose Backup. After configuration, data in the source backup vault is automatically synchronized to the destination backup vault to ensure data consistency between the two locations. Additionally, you can perform cross-region data recovery from the destination backup vault as needed.

For general-purpose backup vaults that store CPFS data, you can configure backup vault replication to achieve cross-region or cross-account disaster recovery protection.

In addition, CPFS backup supports enterprise-grade features such as cross-account backup, automatic archiving, KMS encryption, and immutable backup.

Troubleshooting

If the Status of a backup plan or backup job is abnormal, use the following suggestions to resolve the issue.

  • Follow the on-screen prompts to modify and confirm that the configuration is correct.

  • Backup job Status: Failed ("The client does not exist. Check whether the client is uninstalled or whether the ECS instance is released.")image.png

    1. Check whether the backup directory on the CPFS file system is configured correctly.

    2. The client group has no backup client, or a required dependency is not installed. To reconfigure the backup client, see Install a backup client.

      Note

The default client installation paths are for reference. Use the actual installation paths on your machine.

      • Windows log path: C:\Program Files\Aliyun Hybrid Backup Service Client\logs

      • Linux log path: /opt/alibabacloud/hbrclient/logs

  • Backup plan Status: Paused

This status indicates the backup plan is paused. Cloud Backup does not run backup jobs for paused plans. We recommend resuming the plan as soon as possible.

  • If you need more assistance, see Online Technical Support. You must provide information such as the backup plan ID, region, data source type, and task ID. You must also describe in detail the problem that you encountered, what you were doing when the problem occurred, and your expected solution.
