You can use an FTP client or the file manager in the Web Hosting console to manage website files on your Web Hosting instance. This topic describes how to use the file manager to manage your website files.
Prerequisites
You have prepared your website files on your local host.
Background information
This topic uses a Web Hosting instance of the Enhanced Edition that runs Linux as an example. The steps to manage files on a Windows-based Web Hosting instance are similar.
We recommend using the file manager over an FTP client because it does not require you to install a separate client on your local host. When you upload your website application, you do not need to worry about selecting the correct site root directory, such as /htdocs.
For a Linux-based Web Hosting instance, disable the FTP feature in the Web Hosting console if you do not use an FTP client to manage files. For more information, see Enable and disable the FTP feature.
Limitations
Support for the file manager varies by Web Hosting edition:
Enhanced Edition: Both Linux-based and Windows-based Web Hosting instances of the Enhanced Edition support the file manager.
Other editions: The file manager is supported on only some Web Hosting instances of other editions. Check the Web Hosting console to confirm availability.
Procedure
- Log on to the Cloud Web Hosting management page.
- Find the Cloud Web Hosting instance you want to manage and click Manage in the Actions column.
- In the navigation pane on the left, choose .
On the File Manager page, click Site Root Directory. You can then upload, create, analyze, copy, and paste website files.
The top toolbar contains buttons such as Copy, Cut, Paste, New File, New Directory, and Upload File. A search box in the upper-right corner lets you search by directory or file name. The central area displays the file list. At the bottom are the Batch Set Permissions and Batch Delete buttons. The following sections describe how to use these features:
Upload files
This feature lets you upload website files from your local host to the site root directory of your Linux-based Web Hosting instance.
NoteYou can upload files in formats such as .docx, .xls, .pdf, .rar, .zip, .png, and .jpeg.
You can upload only one file or archive at a time.
To prevent upload failures, do not use Chinese characters or special characters in file names.
Click Upload File.
In the Upload File dialog box, click Browse next to Select Upload Path.
In the File Directory dialog box, select a destination path, such as the site root directory (/), and then click OK.
In the Upload File dialog box, click the
icon in the dotted-line box to select the website file from your local host. You can also drag and drop the website file into the dotted-line box to upload it.
(Conditional) If a file with the same name already exists in the directory, select Overwrite for the Overwrite Existing File option. Alternatively, rename the file you are uploading and try again.
Click OK.
After the file is uploaded, it appears in the Site Root Directory.
Create file or directory
This feature creates a new file or directory in the site root directory of your Web Hosting instance. The steps are the same for creating a file and for creating a directory. This section uses creating a file as an example.
Click New File.
In the New File dialog box, click Browse next to Select Save Directory.
In the File Directory dialog box, select a path for the new file and click OK.
In the New File dialog box, enter a file name in the New File Name field.
Click OK.
After the file or directory is created, it appears in the site root directory.
NoteA new directory is displayed as a Folder.
Directory analysis
Analyze the subdirectories in your site root directory to view the number of files and directories they contain and the total disk space they occupy.
ImportantThe directory analysis feature is available only for dedicated or shared Web Hosting instances of the Linux Enhanced Edition.
Click Directory Analysis.
The analysis is complete when the progress bar reaches 100%.
NoteIf your site root directory contains a large number of files, the analysis may take a long time.
After the directory analysis is complete, the Directory Analysis page displays the top 10 directories ranked separately by the number of files and by storage usage. If the total number of directories is 10 or less, the Directory Analysis page displays all directories.
On the Directory Analysis page, view the file count and total size for the subdirectories in your site root directory.
On the Directory with the Most Files tab, view the number of files in each directory.
On the Directory with the Largest File Space tab, view the total size of files in each directory.
(Optional) On the Directory with the Most Files or Directory with the Largest File Space tab, click a directory in the Directory Name column to view its details.
Click OK.
Copy, cut, and paste
The copy and paste feature duplicates a file to a destination path, while the cut and paste feature moves a file to a destination path. The procedures are similar. This section uses copying a file from the site root directory as an example.
The steps vary depending on the destination path.
ImportantIf a file or directory with the same name exists in the destination path, it will be overwritten.
Scenario 1: Paste to a newly created directory
In the Site Root Directory, create a temporary directory, for example,
Temporary. For more information, see Create a file or directory.
In the site root directory, select the file or directory you want to copy, click Copy, and then click Paste.
In the Message dialog box that appears, click Browse next to Paste Path.
Select the
Temporarydirectory you created as the destination path and click OK.Click OK.
After the file is copied, it appears in the
Temporarydirectory. You can then perform actions such as renaming the file or setting its permissions.
Scenario 2: Paste to an existing directory
In the Site Root Directory, select the file or directory you want to copy, click Copy, and then click Paste.
In the Message dialog box that appears, click Browse next to Paste Path.
Select a destination path and click OK.
For this example, select a folder within the site root directory, such as the
test-01folder.Click OK.
After the file is copied, it appears in the
test-01directory. You can then perform actions such as downloading the file, renaming it, or setting its permissions.
Other features
You can perform various actions on files and directories in the site root directory, such as downloading, finding, viewing, editing, renaming, deleting, and calculating size.
Download a file: Download a file from the site root directory of your Web Hosting instance to your local host.
In the Site Root Directory, find the file you want to download and click Download in the Actions column.
In the File Download dialog box, click the download link or copy it to a new browser tab to download the file, and then click OK.
This example uses Google Chrome. For other browsers, you can click Download directly without copying the download link. The actual user interface may vary.

Viewing files in formats such as GIF, JPEG, PNG, .rar, .zip, .gz, and .tar is not supported. The available features are displayed on the page.
ImportantFor Windows-based Web Hosting instances, you can view only text files encoded in UTF-8 in the file manager. Viewing files with other encodings may result in garbled text.
Select the file you want to view or edit and click View in the Actions column.
In the View/Edit File dialog box, you can view or modify the file content.
Windows-based Web Hosting instances: You can only view file content.
Linux-based Web Hosting instances: You can view and modify file content.

Decompression: Linux-based Web Hosting instances support decompressing .zip and .tar files. Windows-based Web Hosting instances support decompressing .zip and .rar files.
Set permissions: Setting different permissions for your website's files and directories can reduce the risk of unauthorized modifications and improve your website's security. For more information, see Set permissions for files and directories.
You can also set permissions for multiple files or directories at once. Select the items you want to configure and click Batch Set Permissions.
Return to the parent directory: In the breadcrumb trail next to Current Position, click the directory node you want to return to.
