This topic describes the end-to-end offline data migration process for Data Transport (Mini). The process covers migrating data from an on-premises data center to Alibaba Cloud and from Alibaba Cloud to an on-premises data center.

On-premises data center to Alibaba Cloud process

Important

This device model is available only in Chinese mainland regions.

The process is shown in the following figure:

On-premises data center to Alibaba Cloud

  1. Create an order and complete the payment. For more information, see Create an order.

    Note

    After you create the order, Alibaba Cloud personnel will prepare the Data Transport (Mini) device and ship it to the address that you specified in the order.

  2. Create an OSS bucket. For more information, see Create a bucket.

  3. After you receive the Data Transport (Mini) device and confirm it is not damaged, install the hardware. For more information, see Install hardware.

  4. Mount the source data address. For more information, see Mount Data Transport.

  5. Create and run a data migration task to migrate data from your local source to the Data Transport (Mini) device. For more information, see Copy data.

  6. Power off the device and prepare it for return. For more information, see Migrate data to the cloud and verify.

    Note

    After the local migration is complete, Alibaba Cloud personnel will perform the following two operations.

    • Alibaba Cloud personnel will arrange for a designated logistics partner to pick up the Data Transport (Mini) device and transport it to an Alibaba Cloud data center.

    • They will rack the Data Transport (Mini) device in the Alibaba Cloud data center and start the migration task to migrate the data to Alibaba Cloud OSS.

  7. After the migration is complete, Alibaba Cloud personnel will provide a migration report. The report includes the total number and volume of successfully uploaded files, and the locations of the lists of all migrated and failed files. The migration report is for reference only. You are responsible for verifying the data consistency between the source and the cloud. After the data migration is complete, you must promptly revoke the RAM authorization role.

Alibaba Cloud to on-premises data center process

The process is shown in the following figure:

Important

  1. The fee for using Data Transport (Mini) to migrate data from Alibaba Cloud to an on-premises data center is CNY 200 per TB. A minimum data volume of 10 TB is required. If the data volume is less than 10 TB, you will be charged for 10 TB.

  2. Using Data Transport (Mini) is considered a public network download. In addition to the rental fee for the device, you will incur OSS-related fees, such as data egress traffic fees and request fees. For more information about fees, see OSS billing.

  3. If your source data is in the Archive storage class, you must restore it before migration. After the data is restored, you can use Data Transport (Mini) for the data migration. Note the following when you restore data:

    • Before starting the data migration, you must complete the restore operation.

    • Ensure that the restore duration is long enough for the total data volume to be migrated. This prevents the data from returning to a frozen state during the migration.

    • The restore operation incurs data retrieval fees. Some restore services have high fees. For more information about billing rules, see OSS billing.

  1. Before placing an order, submit a request by opening a ticket. In the request, provide your UID and the reason for the data migration.

  2. After the request is approved, go to the console, select the Data backup to on-premises IDC mode, and then create and pay for the order.

  3. Provide the source bucket name, the AccessKey ID and AccessKey secret of a new RAM user with OSS permissions, and the specified download directory. Alibaba Cloud personnel will then migrate the data to the specified Data Transport (Mini) device.

  4. After the data is downloaded to the Data Transport (Mini) device, Alibaba Cloud personnel will provide a migration report. The report includes the total number and volume of files successfully migrated to the device, and the locations of the lists of all migrated and failed files. The migration report is for reference only. Alibaba Cloud personnel will also arrange for the device to be shipped to the specified address.

  5. After you receive the Data Transport (Mini) device and confirm it is not damaged, install the hardware. For more information, see Install hardware.

  6. Mount the data address of your on-premises data center. For more information, see Mount Data Transport.

  7. Create and run a data migration task to migrate data from the Data Transport (Mini) device to your on-premises data center. For more information, see Copy data.

    Note

    Submitting a migration task is only supported if your on-premises data center uses a remote file system, such as a Windows file system, Linux file system, or NAS server. If your on-premises data center uses Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) or another storage class, you must use other tools to perform the migration.

  8. Power off the device and notify Alibaba Cloud to retrieve it. For more information, see the power-off and retrieval notification steps in Migrate data to the cloud and verify.

  9. After the data migration is complete, you are responsible for verifying the data consistency between the cloud and your on-premises data center.
