Bring Your Own IP (BYOIP) lets you migrate your public IPv4 address ranges to Alibaba Cloud. This ensures that your public-facing service IP addresses remain unchanged when you move your workloads to the cloud.

Applicability

  • BYOIP is not supported in the Chinese mainland. The supported regions are listed in the following table.

    Area

    Supported regions

    North America

    US (Silicon Valley), US (Virginia)

    Asia Pacific

China (Hong Kong), Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Japan (Tokyo), Indonesia (Jakarta)

    Europe

    Germany (Frankfurt), UK (London)

  • Only IPv4 addresses can be migrated. IPv6 addresses are not supported. The prefix of your IP address range must be /23 or shorter. Prefixes longer than /23, such as /24, are not supported.

  • The public IPv4 address range must be registered with a Regional Internet Registry (RIR). You can contact your IP address provider for more information.

  • The BYOIP process requires coordination between Alibaba Cloud and carriers and is not immediate. The process is estimated to take one month, depending on the time it takes for Alibaba Cloud to apply for and advertise the IP addresses. Withdrawing an IP address range takes a similar amount of time.

Workflow

When you use BYOIP to migrate a public IPv4 address range, you retain ownership of the address range. Alibaba Cloud advertises the address range on the internet on your behalf. After the address range is advertised, you can allocate specific Elastic IP Addresses (EIPs) from your address range to ensure that your public-facing service IP addresses remain unchanged when you migrate your workloads to the cloud.

2. Update routing information

To ensure that routing policies propagate correctly, you must update your routing information in the Internet Routing Registry (IRR).

Log on to your RIR portal and set the origin attribute for your public IPv4 address range to the Alibaba Cloud ASN, AS45102. For specific instructions, refer to your RIR: ARIN, RIPE, or APNIC.

After you create the object, you can use RADB to query your IP address range and verify that the origin attribute is AS45102.

3. Submit a BYOIP request

Submit a ticket to apply for BYOIP.

In your application, provide the following information: the public IP address range, the region where the addresses will be used, and confirmation that you have changed the ASN to AS45102.

No other information is required at this time. An Alibaba Cloud representative will contact you if additional information is needed after the assessment. Ensure your contact information is up to date.
Alibaba Cloud reserves the right to investigate IP address ranges to reject those with adverse records and a history of malicious activity.

After your request is approved, Alibaba Cloud advertises your public IPv4 address range from the specified region by using the Alibaba Cloud ASN and adds the range to Alibaba Cloud's security protection list.

Important

You are responsible for maintaining the validity of the ROA for your BYOIP address range in the RIR. If the ROA becomes invalid, carriers that perform RPKI Route Origin Validation (ROV) will drop the route for this address range, which may cause your services to become unreachable. Alibaba Cloud reserves the right to stop advertising the address range.

4. Allocate specific EIPs

After the advertisement is complete, you can allocate EIPs from your address range in one of the following ways:

  • Go to the Elastic IP Address console, select the advertised region at the top of the page, and then click Apply for Specific EIP.

  • Add the migrated public IP address range to an IP address pool.

The IP address pool feature is not enabled by default. To use this feature, contact your account manager to request access.

Billing

The BYOIP feature is free of charge. However, for EIPs allocated from your address range, you can only use the pay-as-you-go billing method (billed by fixed bandwidth).

  • EIP configuration fee (public IP address holding fee): Waived. This fee is waived because you retain ownership of the address range after migration.

  • Public network fee (bandwidth fee): You are charged based on the specified peak bandwidth and billing duration.

You can add EIPs only to an Internet Shared Bandwidth instance that uses the pay-as-you-go (by bandwidth) or pay-as-you-go (by enhanced 95th percentile) billing method. You are charged based on the billing method of the instance.

After you submit your BYOIP request, Alibaba Cloud will assess it. A dedicated representative will contact you to discuss and finalize the terms.

FAQ

Can I use my own ASN with BYOIP?

No. To migrate your public IP address range to the cloud, you must change the ASN for the public IP address range to the Alibaba Cloud ASN, AS45102. Alibaba Cloud advertises the address range on your behalf. You cannot use your own ASN.

Is an EIP a native public IP?

No.

A native public IP address is typically a public IP address assigned directly to a device by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) without requiring Network Address Translation (NAT) or a proxy server. This allows the device to communicate directly with the internet and be accessed from the internet. This direct exposure can lead to security risks.

An EIP is a virtualized IP address that belongs to Alibaba Cloud. For example, when an Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance uses an EIP to access the internet, traffic must pass through NAT. Therefore, an EIP is not a native public IP address.

Is BGP Pro EIP advertisement supported?

Yes. Specify this requirement when you submit your ticket.
