Expand disk capacity

As your business and data grow, you may find the disk space on your cloud computers insufficient. You can expand the capacity of a system disk or a data disk. This topic covers the limitations, billing, and procedures for disk expansion.

Background information

Disks

By default, Enterprise Office and General Office cloud computers from Elastic Desktop Service (EDS) use ultra disks. Enterprise Graphics, Graphics, and High-Frequency Office cloud computers use ESSDs. The performance level (PL) of a disk is consistent with the PL specified in the cloud computer template. For more information about disk types and their differences, see Disk types. To upgrade the PL of a disk, see Change the performance level of an ESSD.

Capacity change limitations

The following limits apply to disk expansion:

  • You can only expand a disk. Scaling down a disk is not supported. We recommend that you plan your storage space carefully.

  • When you set the new capacity, you can only increase the size in 10 GiB increments. The maximum capacity for a system disk is 500 GiB, and the maximum capacity for a data disk is 2,040 GiB.

Billing

When you expand a disk, you are charged for the additional capacity. The billing method is the same as that for purchasing a disk. For more information, see Billable items.

  • For subscription cloud computers, you are charged a prorated fee for the difference between the new and old capacity for the remainder of the subscription period.

  • For pay-as-you-go cloud computers, the expansion takes effect immediately, and you are subsequently billed for the new total capacity.

Prerequisites

  • The cloud computer is in the Running or Stopped state.

  • Disk expansion may fail. To prevent data loss, you must back up your data before you expand a disk. We recommend that you create a snapshot for the cloud computer. For details, see Use snapshots (public preview).

Expand disk for a single cloud computer

  1. Log on to the Elastic Desktop Service Enterprise console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Resources > Cloud Computers.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  4. On the Cloud Computers page, find the target cloud computer. In the Actions column, click More and select Scale Up.

  5. In the Scale Up panel, follow the steps that correspond to the billing method of the cloud computer.

    Subscription

    1. In the Target Disk Size section, set the target capacity for the system disk and data disk, and then click Confirm.

    2. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

    3. On the Pay page, click Subscribe and complete the payment as prompted.

    Pay-as-you-go

    1. Set the target capacity for the system disk and data disk, and then click Change.

    2. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

During the disk expansion process, the status of the cloud computer on the Cloud Computers page is Restoring. When the status of the cloud computer changes from Restoring to its state before the expansion (Running or Stopped), the expansion is complete.

Expand disk for multiple cloud computers

  1. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Resources > Cloud Computers.

  2. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

  3. On the Cloud Computers page, select the cloud computers whose disks you want to expand. At the bottom of the page, click More Actions > Scale Up.

  4. In the Scale Up panel, on the Specify Disk Size tab, select a billing method. Then, from the list of cloud computers that use that billing method, select the ones you want to expand and click Next.

    Note

You can expand disks for multiple cloud computers at the same time only if they share the same billing method. If you selected computers with different billing methods, you must process them in separate batches for each method.

  5. On the Confirm Disk Size tab, choose one of the following options, and then click Confirm.

    • Uniform expansion: To expand the disks of all selected cloud computers to the same capacity, set the target capacity in the Specify Disk Size section.

    • Individual expansion: To set a different capacity for each cloud computer, specify the new capacity for each one in the table.

  6. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

  7. (Conditional) If the selected cloud computers are subscription-based, on the Pay page, click Subscribe and complete the payment as prompted.
