Change the data center for a web hosting instance

If your website's audience changes geographically, you may need to move your Web Hosting instance to a data center in a closer region. This helps improve website access speed and ensure business continuity. This topic explains how to change the data center of a Web Hosting instance, using a Standard Edition Exclusive Web Hosting instance that runs a Linux operating system as an example.

Before you begin

Before you change the data center of your Web Hosting instance, review the following information:

Supported instance types

You can change the data center only for Web Hosting instances located in the Chinese mainland. This applies to both Exclusive Web Hosting and Shared Web Hosting instances.

Important

You cannot change the data center for Exclusive Web Hosting instances in data centers in Singapore, the US, or China (Hong Kong). To move to one of the international regions, you must purchase a new Web Hosting instance in the target region. For more information, see Purchase a Web Hosting instance.

Frequency

You can change the data center of an instance only once per day.

Migration methods

  • Automatic System Migration: Your site data is migrated within three business days.

  • Manual FTP Migration: You must download the website programs and database data from your original Web Hosting instance to an on-premises host and then upload them to the new instance.

Data backup

Before you change the data center, back up your site data. For more information, see Back up and restore data.

Warning

After you change the data center, the data in the original data center is retained for only seven days, regardless of whether you choose Automatic System Migration or Manual FTP Migration. Back up your website and database data promptly. After seven days, all data will be permanently deleted.

Procedure

  1. Change the data center of your Web Hosting instance.

    You can choose between Automatic System Migration and Manual FTP Migration. Follow the instructions for your selected method.

    Important

    With Automatic System Migration, you do not need to use an FTP client to download and upload website programs or to import and export database data. We recommend using Automatic System Migration.

    (Recommended) Automatic system migration

    1. Log on to the Web Hosting console.

    2. On the Web Hosting page, find the instance whose data center you want to change. In the Actions column, choose 图标 > Change data center.

    3. On the Confirm change of data center page, in the Change data center section, select the new data center and the migration method (Automatic System Migration), and then click Next.

    4. Confirm the new data center and the Automatic System Migration method, and then click Submit.

    5. In the dialog box that appears, click OK.

      After you successfully change the host's data center, a Request submitted successfully message appears.

    6. Click Back to return to the Web Hosting console.

      On the Web Hosting console, you can view information about the new instance. For more information, see View the information about the new instance after you change the data center or operating system.

      Note

      If you have not initialized your original Web Hosting instance, you must initialize the new instance after you change its data center. For more information, see Initialize a Web Hosting instance.

    Manual FTP migration

    1. Back up the website data and database data of your Web Hosting instance and save them to an on-premises host.

      For more information, see Back up and restore data.

    2. Log on to the Cloud Web Hosting management page.

    3. On the Web Hosting page, find the instance whose data center you want to change. In the Actions column, choose 图标 > Change data center.

    4. On the Confirm change of data center page, in the Change data center section, select the new data center and the migration method (Manual FTP Migration), and then click Next.

    5. Confirm the new data center and the Manual FTP Migration method, and then click Submit.

    6. In the dialog box that appears, click OK.

      After you successfully change the host's data center, a Request submitted successfully message appears.

    7. Click Back to return to the Web Hosting console.

      On the Web Hosting console, you can view information about the new instance. For more information, see View the information about the new instance after you change the data center or operating system.

      Note

      If you have not initialized your original Web Hosting instance, you must initialize the new instance after you change its data center. For more information, see Initialize a Web Hosting instance.

    8. Upload the website data from your on-premises host to the new Web Hosting instance. For more information, see Upload website files to a Linux-based Web Hosting instance.

    9. Import the database data from your on-premises host into the new Web Hosting instance. For more information, see Import a database file.

  2. Reset the passwords for the Web Hosting instance.

    After you change the data center, your instance's access information changes. You must reset the Host Management Console password, FTP login password, and database password.

    Note

    After you change the data center, the instance name, instance IP address, and database endpoint change. To view information about the new instance, see View the information about the new instance after you change the data center or operating system.

    1. On the Instances page, find the new Web Hosting instance and click Manage in the Actions column.

    2. On the Site Information tab, in the Account information section, click [Reset Password] next to Host Management Console password.

    3. In the Reset management console password dialog box, enter a new password as prompted and click Confirm.

      A message appears at the top of the page indicating that the password is changed.

    4. In the Account information section, click [Reset Password] next to FTP login password.

    5. In the Reset FTP password dialog box, enter a new password as prompted and click Confirm.

      A message appears at the top of the page indicating that the password is changed.

    6. In the Database information section, click [Reset Password] next to Database password.

    7. In the Reset database password dialog box, click Confirm.

    8. Enter a new password as prompted in the dialog box and click Confirm.

      A message appears at the top of the page indicating that the password is changed.

Next steps

After you change the data center, complete the following tasks:

  • Update the database connection string in your website's configuration files.

  • Point your domain name to the IP address of your new Web Hosting instance. For more information, see Domain name resolution for Web Hosting.
