If an Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance on a Dedicated Host (DDH) does not meet your needs, you can upgrade or downgrade its instance type (vCPUs and memory) and public bandwidth.
DDHs support only the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) network type. Therefore, all ECS instances in this topic are VPC-type instances.
Upgrade or downgrade subscription instance types
For instances with predefined specifications, you can only switch to another predefined specification. You cannot upgrade or downgrade vCPUs and memory independently.
For instances with custom specifications, you can upgrade or downgrade vCPUs and memory independently.
The following table describes how to upgrade or downgrade instance types.
Operation | Upgrading and downgrading | Effective time | References |
Upgrade a subscription ECS instance type | You can use the upgrade configuration feature to upgrade the instance type. Before you upgrade, make sure the instance is in the Stopped state. | After you upgrade the instance type, the new instance type takes effect when you start the instance.
Downgrade a subscription ECS instance type | You can use the downgrade configuration feature to downgrade the instance type. Before you downgrade, make sure the instance is in the Stopped state. | After you downgrade the instance type, the new instance type takes effect when you start the instance.
You can use the renewal with downgrade feature to downgrade the instance type during renewal. Important The renewal with downgrade feature is not supported for ECS instances with custom specifications. | After the downgrade, the new instance type takes effect in the next billing cycle. You must restart the ECS instance in the console or by calling an API operation within seven days after the new billing cycle starts for the new instance type to take effect. Warning The restart operation stops the instance for a short period of time and may interrupt services that are running on the instance. We recommend that you restart the instance during off-peak hours. |
Upgrade or downgrade the public bandwidth of a subscription instance
The following table describes how to upgrade or downgrade public bandwidth.
The feature to upgrade or downgrade the public bandwidth of a subscription instance applies only to ECS instances that are not associated with elastic IP addresses (EIPs). To change the public bandwidth for an ECS instance that is associated with an EIP, see Modify the bandwidth of an EIP.
Operation Type | Upgrading or downgrading | Effective time | References |
Upgrade the public bandwidth of a subscription instance | You can use the upgrade configuration feature to upgrade the base bandwidth or change the peak bandwidth. | The public bandwidth upgrade takes effect immediately. Note If you upgrade the public bandwidth of an ECS instance from 0 Mbit/s to a non-zero value, a static public IP address is automatically assigned. | Modify the bandwidth of a subscription instance with a static public IP address |
You can use the temporary bandwidth upgrade feature to upgrade the public bandwidth. | The temporary public bandwidth upgrade takes effect immediately. The bandwidth automatically reverts to its original value at the end of the specified period. The base bandwidth is not changed during the temporary upgrade. Note If you upgrade the public bandwidth of an ECS instance from 0 Mbit/s to a non-zero value, a static public IP address is automatically assigned.
Downgrade the public bandwidth of a subscription instance | You can use the downgrade configuration feature to downgrade the base bandwidth or change the peak bandwidth. | The public bandwidth downgrade takes effect immediately. Note If you downgrade the public bandwidth of an ECS instance to 0 Mbit/s, the public IP address is automatically detached. | Modify the bandwidth of a subscription instance with a static public IP address |
You can use the renewal with downgrade feature to downgrade the base bandwidth or change the peak bandwidth during renewal. Important The renewal with downgrade feature is not supported for ECS instances with custom specifications. | After the downgrade, the new public bandwidth takes effect in the next billing cycle. Note If you downgrade the public bandwidth of an ECS instance to 0 Mbit/s, the public IP address is automatically detached. |
