This article explains how to upgrade Windows Server 2016 to mitigate end-of-life risks, restore support for certain EDS Enterprise features, and ensure business continuity.
Background
Microsoft has ended Mainstream Support for Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, and Windows 10. These operating systems no longer receive free incident support or security updates from Microsoft. Although EDS Enterprise Edition still supports creating cloud computers with these operating systems and continues to provide EDS-level compatibility support, be aware of the associated risks before you choose an older OS version.

The dates listed above are in the Pacific Time Zone. EDS Enterprise Edition aligns its Windows OS support lifecycle with Microsoft.
Impact after Windows Extended Support ends:
-
After the Extended Support end date, Microsoft will no longer provide any software maintenance or support, including bug fixes and feature updates.
-
Cloud computers that were created in EDS Enterprise Edition with these operating systems will continue to run after the Extended Support end date. However, certain features such as dual-monitor support may be limited. We recommend that you upgrade to a newer OS version as soon as possible to ensure security and stability.

Ensure the cloud computer has internet access.
NoteIf a cloud computer cannot access the internet, try one of the following solutions.
-
For cloud computers in Chinese mainland regions: Internet access is enabled by default. If a cloud computer cannot connect, see What do I do if a cloud computer cannot access the Internet?.
-
For cloud computers in the China (Hong Kong) and international regions: Due to regulatory requirements, you must complete enterprise real-name verification, enable premium bandwidth, and bind it to an office network to access the internet. For more information, see Enable premium bandwidth and Bind or unbind an office network.

To upgrade the OS to Windows Server 2022, the system disk must meet the following space requirements. Otherwise, the upgrade will fail.
-
The system disk has at least 20 GB of available space.
-
The available space on the system disk is greater than the size of the
C:\Windowsdirectory.
NoteIf the system disk does not have enough space, free up space or increase the disk capacity. For more information, see Increase the disk capacity.

Usage notes
-
OS upgrades are not supported for computer pools.
