Upgrade your cloud computers from Windows Server 2016 to Windows Server 2022 to stay ahead of end-of-life (EOL) risks and keep all EDS Enterprise features working.
Background
Microsoft has ended Mainstream Support for Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019, which means no free incident support or security updates are provided. EDS Enterprise still supports creating cloud computers with these OS versions and offers compatibility assistance, but running an unsupported OS carries real risks.
The following table shows the support timeline for each Windows Server version. All dates are in Pacific Time (PT).
| OS version | Support start date | Mainstream Support end date | Extended Support end date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Server 2016 | October 15, 2016 | January 11, 2022 | January 12, 2027 |
| Windows Server 2019 | November 13, 2018 | January 09, 2024 | January 09, 2029 |
| Windows Server 2022 | August 18, 2021 | October 13, 2026 | October 14, 2031 |
EDS Enterprise's service support cycle for Windows Server follows Microsoft's schedule.
After Extended Support ends:
Microsoft no longer provides software maintenance, bug fixes, or feature updates.
Cloud computers created in the EDS Enterprise console continue to run, but features such as dual-screen may be limited.
For more information on the Windows Server lifecycle, see the Microsoft documentation for Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2022. For details on Mainstream Support and Extended Support phases, see Lifecycle phases for products under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure:
Your cloud computers are deployed in a supported region. See the table below.
Your cloud computers can access the Internet.
The system disk on each cloud computer meets the following space requirements:
Available space is at least 20 GiB.
Available space is greater than the size of the
C:\Windowsdirectory.

Internet access
Cloud computers in the Chinese mainland regions have Internet access enabled by default. If a cloud computer cannot connect, see What do I do if a cloud computer cannot access the Internet?
Cloud computers in China (Hong Kong) and overseas regions require enterprise real-name verification, the premium bandwidth feature enabled, and a bandwidth plan attached to your office network. To set this up, see Enable a premium bandwidth plan. Then attach the plan by following the steps in Attach a bandwidth plan to or detach a bandwidth plan from an office network.
Disk space
If the available space does not meet the requirements, free up space or expand the disk. See Increase the disk capacity.
Usage notes
Cloud computer shares do not support OS upgrades.
The upgrade automatically stops the cloud computer. Save all data before starting.
The upgrade takes about 45 minutes.
Update the system image
Log on to the EDS Enterprise console.
In the left-side navigation pane, choose Resources > Cloud Computers.
In the upper-left corner of the top navigation bar, select a region.
In the EDS Enterprise console, click
in the Specifications/OS/Protocol column and click Update Now.In the Introduction to OS Upgrade message, read the precautions and select Stop cloud computers and upgrade OS.
Click Update Now.
Verify the upgrade
After the upgrade completes, confirm that everything is working:
Log on to the EDS Enterprise console.
In the left-side navigation pane, choose Resources > Cloud Computers.
In the upper-left corner of the top navigation bar, select a region.
On the Cloud Computers page, find the cloud computer and check the Status column. The status returns to its pre-upgrade state when the upgrade is complete.
Log in to the cloud computer and verify that your applications start and run correctly.
Test any features that were restricted before the upgrade, such as dual-screen.
What to do next
