To protect against disasters, hardware failures, data loss, corruption, and accidental deletion, use Cloud Backup to back up your SAP HANA databases promptly. Cloud Backup supports backing up SAP HANA databases deployed on Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances and stores the backups in the cloud. You can recover your database to its original state at any point in time or restore it to another SAP HANA instance in the same region. This topic describes how to back up an SAP HANA database.
Prerequisites
-
You have activated Alibaba Cloud Cloud Backup. Activating Cloud Backup is free. Using the SAP HANA backup feature of Cloud Backup incurs the following charges:
-
SAP HANA backup software usage fee. One software usage fee applies per HANA instance (single-node or dual-node).
-
Storage capacity fee. Charged based on the deduplicated and compressed data size.
For pricing details, see Pricing Details.
-
-
If you are backing up a database on an ECS instance, install Alibaba Cloud Cloud Assistant on the ECS instance.
The ECS backup client works together with Alibaba Cloud Cloud Assistant.
-
If your ECS instance was purchased before December 1, 2017, install the Cloud Assistant client manually. For more information, see Install the Cloud Assistant client.
-
If your ECS instance was purchased on or after December 1, 2017, the Cloud Assistant client is preinstalled by default.
-
-
You have the SYSTEM username and password for your SAP HANA instance.
-
You have registered your SAP HANA instance and verified its nodes. For more information, see Register an SAP HANA instance and Verify SAP HANA nodes.
Notes
-
In the same region, recovery is supported only between instances in the same backup vault. To recover across different instances, register all relevant instances into the same backup vault.
-
Only SAP HANA instances deployed on Alibaba Cloud ECS are supported. SAP HANA instances deployed in on-premises data centers are not supported. However, you can first back up your SAP HANA data to local storage and then back up those files to Cloud Backup. For more information, see Back up local files.
-
Cloud Backup uses Backint to directly call SAP HANA’s backup interface. Backint supports SAP HANA 1.0 SPS 09 (Revision 94) and later, and SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 01 and later with Multitenant Database Containers (MDC). It does not support SAP HANA 1.0 Single-container (single-tenant) versions.
Create a backup plan
Create a backup plan as follows:
Log on to the Cloud Backup console.
In the navigation pane on the left, choose .
In the top navigation bar, select a region.
-
On the SAP HANA Instances page, find the target instance and click Back Up in the Actions column.
-
In the Create Backup Plan panel, select the database to back up and click Next.
NoteYou cannot back up databases that are stopped.
In the Select Database step, choose the target database from the list. The list shows each database’s name, hostname:port, and running status. Only databases with a status of Running can be selected.
-
On the Configure Plan tab, enter the required parameters and click OK.
Parameter
Required
Description
Backup Policy
Yes
-
To back up the database immediately, select Right Now.
-
To back up the database on a schedule, select On Schedule.
Backup Type
Yes
-
Full: Performs a full backup of the selected database.
-
Incremental: After a full backup or the previous incremental backup, backs up only files added or modified since the last backup.
-
Differential: Backs up only files modified since the last full backup.
NoteA backup plan supports only one backup type:
-
For full + incremental backups, create two backup plans: one with backup type Full and another with backup type Incremental.
-
For full + differential backups, create two backup plans: one with backup type Full and another with backup type Differential.
Backup Prefix
No
You can define a custom backup prefix. If you do not specify one, the default option is used.
Plan Name
Yes (for scheduled backup)
Enter a name for the backup plan.
Start Time
Yes (for scheduled backup)
Select the time to start the backup. Time is accurate to the second.
ImportantDo not set the same start time for full, incremental, and differential backups. Doing so may cause unexpected errors.
Backup Interval
Yes (for scheduled backup)
Select the backup frequency. Time is accurate to the hour. Options include hourly, daily, and weekly.
The backup plan is created successfully. After creation, view the plan in the list on the Backup Plans tab. Its status appears as Scheduled.
-
Successful backup
When the backup runs at the scheduled time, Cloud Backup starts executing the backup plan. When the backup job Status changes to Successful, the current backup is complete.
(Optional) Set retention period
After you set the data retention period for SAP HANA backups, Cloud Backup automatically cleans up expired Backint backups, related catalog records, and stored data when they reach their expiration date.
Cleaned-up data cannot be recovered. Set the retention period carefully.
Vault replication support
To protect business continuity from regional disasters or account management risks, Cloud Backup lets you configure cross-region backup or cross-account vault replication for backup vaults whose Storage Vault Type is General Backup. Data in the source vault is automatically synchronized to the replication target vault. You can also restore data from the target vault on demand.
For general-purpose backup vaults storing SAP HANA data, vault replication enables cross-region or cross-account disaster recovery protection. Additionally, SAP HANA backup supports enterprise-grade features such as cross-account backup and backup locking.
