DataWorks billing overview
DataWorks charges mainly consist of five parts:
Software fees: fees for a software edition that grants access to features;
Resource group fees: fees for resource groups that run tasks;
Scheduled instance fees: fees for task scheduling;
Data Agent fees: fees for AI-enhanced data development capabilities, with separate seat-based and pay-as-you-go billing methods.
Other fees: overage fees for services such as Data Quality and Intelligent Monitoring.
In addition, the underlying engines, such as MaxCompute, generate separate bills for computing and storage.
Creating a DataWorks workspace does not itself incur charges. Charges arise only when you use relevant features, such as running tasks or using resource groups, and are calculated for each billable item.
1. Software fees
Purchasing a software edition only gives you access to its features. Resources consumed when tasks run are billed separately.
Software fees are fixed fees for the features of a specific DataWorks edition. They are usually paid on a subscription basis. Each edition unlocks a different level of platform capabilities.
Billable item | Description | Billing method | Billing reference |
Free edition | Refers to Basic Edition, which provides essential development and scheduling features and is suitable for individual developers. | Supports only subscription.
Paid editions | Refers to Standard Edition, Professional Edition, Enterprise Edition. These editions provide more advanced and extensive development, governance, security, and O&M features.
Value-added module | Refers to Data Modeling. Data Modeling supports dimensional modeling. You can use it to plan and design a data warehouse, formulate and maintain enterprise data standards, perform dimensional modeling, and define data metrics to build a data warehouse. |
2. Resource group fees
Resource group fees are a major cost incurred when DataWorks executes tasks, such as data synchronization and task scheduling.
Billable item | Description | Billing method | Billing reference |
Serverless resource group | This resource group is not divided into categories and supports scheduling, data integration, and DataService tasks. | Supports pay-as-you-go billing, subscription, and resource group savings plans.
Exclusive resource groups (no longer recommended) | Platform-managed resource groups, including exclusive scheduling, data integration, and DataService resources. | Supports only subscription. | Billing for legacy resource groups New users can no longer purchase legacy resource groups. |
Shared resource groups (no longer recommended) | Shared resources provided by DataWorks and available to all tenants. | Supports only pay-as-you-go billing. |
3. Scheduled instance fees
Billable item | Description | Billing method | Billing reference |
Number of scheduled instances | Task scheduling fees are incurred when you run scheduled tasks on a Serverless resource group or a shared scheduling resource group. | A daily free quota is provided. Usage beyond the quota is billed by the number of successful instances per day. |
4. Data Agent fees
Data Agent provides AI-enhanced data development capabilities. It offers seat-based billing and pay-as-you-go billing as two separate billing methods, each of which must be activated separately.
Billable item | Description | Billing method | Billing reference |
seat-based billing | Applies to Agent and Chat BI features. Activating a seat includes a complimentary token quota, which is consumed first when you use the features. | subscription
pay-as-you-go billing | Applies to all features. If both seat-based and pay-as-you-go billing are activated, usage beyond the seat quota is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis after the quota is exhausted. | pay-as-you-go billing(separate activation required) |
5. Other fees
The features in this section need to be activated only when first used. A free quota is provided, and usage beyond the quota is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis. Monitor your usage to avoid unexpected charges.
Billable item | Description | Billing method | Billing reference |
Internet traffic | If a data integration task runs on an exclusive resource group and its data source uses a public endpoint, any Internet traffic generated during data transfer is billed based on usage. | Billed by traffic volume in GB.
Intelligent Baseline | The baseline feature of Intelligent Monitoring monitors task execution. Enabled baselines generate baseline instances. | A daily free quota of baseline instances is provided. Usage beyond the quota is billed by the number of baseline instances per day.
Alert text messages and phone calls | Alert text messages and phone calls generated by monitoring alerts. | A monthly free text message quota is provided. Usage beyond the quota is billed by the number of messages per month. A monthly free phone call quota is provided. Usage beyond the quota is billed by the number of calls per month.
Data Quality | Data Quality can monitor the quality of table data generated by tasks. | A daily free quota of successful rule-check instances is provided. Usage beyond the quota is billed by the number of successful instances per day.
OpenAPI | DataWorks provides OpenAPI, which you can use for custom business development. | A free call quota is provided. Usage beyond the quota is billed per 10,000 calls per month. Important Only Enterprise Edition supports paying for usage beyond the quota.
Cards and reports (Enhanced Analysis) | Enhanced Analysis in DataWorks Data Analysis provides cards and reports. You can visualize data and create reports without downloading the data. | A daily free quota of billable items is provided. Usage beyond the quota is billed by item count per day. |
Appendix: third-party service fees
DataWorks is a task development and scheduling platform. It orchestrates and submits tasks. Actual computing and data storage are performed by underlying compute engines, such as MaxCompute, Hologres, and EMR.
Therefore, your total data development costs include the following independently billed items:
Computing fees: charged by compute engines such as MaxCompute and E-MapReduce based on the complexity and duration of SQL or MapReduce tasks that you run.
Storage fees: charged by storage services such as MaxCompute and OSS based on the amount of data you store.
These fees are charged by the third-party service providers, not by DataWorks.
