Domain name selection and rules
Multiple domain names for one website
Yes. There is no limit to the number of domain names an individual or business can register, and you can point multiple domain names to a single website. Registering domain names with different extensions or similar content offers several advantages.
-
Brand protection: Registering your brand with multiple extensions (for example,
www.your-company.netandwww.your-company.com) helps protect your brand identity and prevents cybersquatting. You can also use different extensions to target audiences in different countries and create localized websites. -
Increased traffic: Pointing different domain names to the same website makes it easier for users to find you, even if they misspell your website's name.
-
Marketing campaigns: Use unique domain names for special promotions or advertising campaigns to promote an event, new product, or project.
-
Professional email: Register a
.comor.netdomain name for your email address. An address that includes your company or brand name, rather than a generic service like Hotmail or Gmail, looks more professional.
Handling taken domain names
Domain names are unique. Once a domain name is registered, no one else can register it. You can try searching for the same name with a different extension. For example, if example.com is taken, you can register example.net or example.org. These alternatives provide the same functionality.
If you want to acquire a domain name that is registered, you typically need to contact the current registrant and inquire if they are willing to transfer it.
Maximum registration period
The maximum registration period for a .co domain name is 5 years. Other common domain names, such as .com, .net, and .cn, can be registered for a maximum of 10 years.
Reusing documents for multiple registrations
No. If you add multiple domain names to the shopping cart and pay for them in a single transaction, you only need to submit your verification documents once. If you register domain names with the same information at different times, after your identity verification documents are approved for the first registration, Alibaba Cloud saves the documents. The next time you use the same information to register a domain name, the system will match your saved documents, and you can choose to reuse them.
Verifying successful registration
Log on to the Alibaba Cloud domain name registration page and search for your domain name.
If the search result shows the status as Taken and the WHOIS information for the domain name is available, the registration was successful. You should verify that the registrant information is correct. If it is incorrect, log on to the Alibaba Cloud account that owns the domain name to update the registration information. For more information, see Modify registrant information.
Registering domain names with restricted words
If a domain name contains words related to "China" or "nation", in either Chinese or English, such as China, chn, or sino, it must be registered by the relevant rights holder. Please register a different domain name.
If the name of the registering organization meets the requirements (for example, it starts with "China", "national", "Chinese", or "nationwide"), you can submit a ticket to apply for registration after your information template is approved. The ticket must include the following documents: a photo or scan of the registrant organization's certificate, a photo or scan of the domain contact's ID, and a domain name application statement stamped with the registrant organization's official seal. The statement must specify the domain name to be registered, the name of the registrant organization, the name of the domain contact, and the purpose of the registration. After you provide these documents, customer service will forward them to the review team and submit them to the reviewing authority.
Registering domains for multiple companies
No. A single Alibaba Cloud account supports creating multiple information templates. You can create a separate information template for each company with its respective name, contact information, and other details. When you register a domain name, simply select the appropriate company's information template as the registrant.
Registration process and payment
Using coupons and codes
-
Coupon packages: On the Domain name batch coupon packages page, you can view and purchase limited-time special offers for different domain name extensions. To see your purchased packages, go to the page. Then, in the Operation column for a package, click Use to purchase multiple domain names with the same suffix.
NoteCoupon packages can be used only for new domain name registrations and cannot be combined with other offers.
-
Coupon codes: You can use coupon codes during domain name registration, transfer, or renewal to receive a promotional discount. For more information, see Coupon codes.
Reasons for registration failure
-
Possible cause: Your account has overdue payments. The system first applied the payment for the current domain name registration to the outstanding balance, causing the new registration to fail.
Solution: Log on to your Alibaba Cloud account. Go to to check your spending records, and then try to purchase the domain name again.
-
Possible cause: The domain name you are trying to register is a trademark-protected or premium domain name.
Solution: If a registration fails for this reason, the payment is refunded to your original payment method. You can then register a different domain name.
-
Possible cause: The domain name violates the China Internet Domain Name Regulations.
Solution: If a registration fails for this reason, the payment is refunded to your original payment method. You can then register a different domain name.
-
Possible cause: The domain name was a "HiChina pre-ordered" domain. A successful pre-order does not guarantee a successful registration, especially for popular keywords or extensions, as other providers may register the domain first.
Solution: If the registration fails, the pre-payment is refunded to your Alibaba Cloud account. You can then register a different domain name.
-
Possible cause: The registration of a .cn or .中国 domain name failed because the registrant name exceeds 64 characters.
Solution: If the registration fails for this reason, the payment is refunded to your original payment method. When you try again, use only the first 64 characters of the organization's name as the registrant name.
-
Possible cause: The information template used for registration is outdated and no longer meets the current registry's identity verification requirements.
Solution: Create a new information template. Ensure that the registration information is authentic, valid, and complete, and then use the new template to submit the registration.
Error: Restricted domain name
If a domain name contains words such as "China", "nation", "Chinese", or "national", or other Chinese or English characters with the same meaning (such as China, chn, or sino), the domain name must be registered by the relevant rights holder. Please register a different domain name.
Error: Invalid information template
Switch to another verified information template and try again.
Post-registration management and status
Registration stuck in 'Processing' state
A domain name registration order may remain in the "Processing" state after payment for several reasons:
-
Trademark-protected domain name
If the domain name is protected by the registry, it cannot be registered by an unauthorized party. Alibaba Cloud reviews orders in the "Processing" state on the same day. If your domain name is found to be trademark-protected, the order status changes to "Failed", and you will receive a registration failure email.
-
Incorrect registration information
If the information you provided does not pass the registry's review, registration is delayed. Alibaba Cloud reviews "Processing" orders daily. If we find incorrect information, we will assist in correcting it and resubmitting it to the registry until the purchase is successful. This process is typically completed within one business day.
-
System upgrade: A system upgrade may cause a temporary "Processing" state. The backend system automatically resubmits the order to complete the purchase. If you encounter this, please wait 30 minutes and check the status again.
Newly registered domain becomes unusable
According to registry regulations, after a .xin or .cn domain name is successfully registered, you must submit documents for identity verification and pass the review within 5 days. If you do not pass identity verification within this period, the domain name is locked by the registry, DNS resolution is suspended, and the website becomes inaccessible. After you complete identity verification and pass the review, the domain name status changes to "OK" the next day.
After a .com or .net domain name is registered, it is automatically submitted for a naming audit. After the domain name passes the audit, which typically takes one to two days, its status changes to "OK". For more information about identity verification, see Procedure for domain name identity verification.
Changes and refunds for registered domains
No. Once a domain name is successfully registered, it cannot be changed and the registration fee is non-refundable.
However, some extensions support paid deletion during the deletion grace period. You can initiate this on the Batch paid deletion page. This action incurs a non-refundable service fee, but the remainder of the registration fee is refunded. Not all extensions support this feature, and fees vary.
Deletion after the grace period
No. A domain name cannot be deleted after its deletion grace period expires.
The paid deletion feature is available only during the deletion grace period immediately following registration. This period is typically five days but varies by extension. To view the specific grace period for an extension, click View deletion fee details in the console.
To cancel a .gov.cn domain name after registration, you must submit a valid cancellation application form and identity documents to your domain name registrar, such as Alibaba Cloud. The registrar will review the documents and cancel the domain name upon approval.

Requirements for .cn domain names
-
Regional requirements:
CNNIC has not authorized the Alibaba Cloud China site to provide registration services for
.cnand.中国domains to personal users from Hong Kong and Macao, or to personal and enterprise users from Taiwan. These users cannot use the Alibaba Cloud China site to register these domains or perform identity verification. To register a.cnor.中国domain, go to the Alibaba Cloud international site. Identity verification is required when you register a.cndomain. -
Naming rules:
-
Domain names can contain Chinese characters, English letters (a-z, case-insensitive), numbers (0-9), and hyphens (-). Spaces and other special characters (such as !, $, &, and ?) are not allowed.
-
A hyphen (
-) cannot be used at the beginning or end of a domain name, and the name cannot contain consecutive hyphens. -
The total length of the domain name cannot exceed 63 characters. For Chinese domain names, this limit applies to the Punycode version of the name.
-
Some extensions, such as
.com.cn,.net.cn, and.org.cn, do not support Chinese characters. -
If a domain name is registered for an organization and contains words such as '中国' (China), '国家' (nation), '中华' (Chinese), or '全国' (national), or other Chinese or English characters with the same meaning (such as China, chn, or sino), the domain must be registered by the corresponding rights holder. Individuals or unauthorized organizations are not permitted to register the domain. Otherwise, the domain will fail the naming audit.
-
Requirements for .cn category and region domains
You cannot directly register a category or administrative region domain name specified by the registry, such as ac.cn. However, you can register a third-level domain name under it, such as example.ac.cn.
Supported .cn category and region extensions
Alibaba Cloud supports the registration of five category domain name extensions (.com.cn, .net.cn, .org.cn, .gov.cn, and .ac.cn) and all 34 administrative region domain name extensions. You can go to the Domain name registration page and select CN domain names to search for and register a domain name.
.hk domain name registration
Different registrars for .hk domains
In 2023, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) approved the ICP filing qualification for the .hk and .香港 top-level domains. Due to policy restrictions, .hk domains registered before this approval could not be directly managed by domestic registrars and were required to be managed by the Hong Kong Domain Name Registration Company Limited (HKDNR). This resulted in some .hk domains remaining within the overseas registrar system, creating a special 'two registrars' situation.
Transferring .hk domains to Alibaba Cloud
To transfer a .hk domain name from HKDNR to Alibaba Cloud, you must first transfer the domain name to a third-party registrar (such as West.cn), and then transfer it from the third-party registrar to Alibaba Cloud.
.hk renewal price discrepancies
The difference in renewal prices for .hk domain names stems from the different registrar systems:
-
If the registrar for the
.hkdomain name is the Hong Kong Domain Name Registration Company Limited (HKDNR): The domain is managed under an overseas registrar system with independent pricing. The renewal fee is based on its standard rate of CNY 800 per year. -
If the
.hkdomain name is managed by an Alibaba Cloud domestic registrar: It follows the localized pricing of CNY 145 per year, which complies with the MIIT filing requirements approved in 2023. To benefit from this lower price, you must first transfer the domain name from HKDNR to the Alibaba Cloud domestic registrar system. Otherwise, the domain name renewal is still charged according to the HKDNR overseas system.NoteDomain name renewal prices are subject to change. Please refer to the actual renewal price shown at checkout.
